Doom Metal aus Chile. Allerdings hat sich die Band nicht ausschließlich auf Doom Metal limitiert, wenn es auch die Hauptrichtung ist. Teils progressiv, melodisch angehauchter death metal ist sicherlich auch eine Umschreibung für den Sound der Chilenen. Die Produktion ist außerordentlich gut. Insgesamt kann man das Album als gelungen bezeichnen, wenn auch die etwas brutaleren Momente von mir stark vermisst werden, d.h. es gibt keine so richtig fetten parts. Alles ist eher im seichten Bereich angesiedelt. Mal antesten!(Tino)

Gar nicht so leicht Euch etwas über diese fünfköpfige Formation aus Chile (!) zu berichten, die sich hier dem düstersten und traurigsten Doom Metal widmen. Das Songmaterial liegt dermassen im Magen, dass man aufpassen muss nicht irgendwelche Schäden davon zu tragen. Wie bei eigentlich allen Doom Metal Bands handelt es sich bei den vorgetragenen Kompositionen um überlange Songs (Durchschnitt 8 Minuten), welche sehr langatmig und intensiv auf den Zuhörer wirken, was auch am schleppenden Tempo liegen mag. Dazu gesellt sich ein sehr depressiv veranlagter Sänger, der all das Elend dieser Welt in Worte bzw. Schreie fassen will und man merkt ihm nur allzu deutlich an, wie sehr er hinter seinen Vocals steht. Aber auch etliche ruhige und instrumentale Passagen sind in den Songs auszumachen, die allesamt sehr traurig stimmen und eine bedrückte Stimmung aufkommen lassen. "The Tatterdemalion express" ist sicherlich kein Album, dass man zu jeder Tageszeit gleich geniessen kann, denn dafür nehmen einen die Songs zu sehr mit, aber um Mitternacht rum mit vielen Kerzen und windigen Wetterverhältnissen entfaltet dieses Album bestimmt am besten seine Magie. Was mir an Mar De Grises besonders gut gefällt ist das Händchen für wirklich traurige und ergreifende Songs, sowie die Mischung aus depressiven Schreien und cleanen Gesang, der auch häufig flüsternd vorgetragen wird. Ebenfalls gelungen ist der Einsatz von Keyboard, der genau richtig dosiert ist und eine gespenstische Stimmung entfacht. Für Doom Metal Fans sicherlich eine Kaufempfehlung.

The true damnation is to be stuck within an on-going loop, a wave of sound, that doesn't change or evolve. Mar De Grises, hailing from Chile, Land of Doom, turned that sound into art. The sheer insanity that goes through this album and its various soundscapes doesn't fall, in my opinion from such doom giants such as Skepticism, that created this sound, built the walls to this voidful damnation, that can wear every shape and temperature it would choose.

The songs are built from grandiose outbursts and minimalistic quiet moments, and ofcourse, crossovers to other genres, done in a masterful, almost Jester-like deliberate manner, but do not take anything away from the current atmosphere, or the depth of the momentary change, that is passed, but felt afar.

The drumming has a certain touch of sensuality, maybe because it gets his own character during many of the quiet moments, and the madness is sensual as well. The guitar parts are both melodic and disharmonic, amazingly beautiful, almost feel locked within the 55'59 minutes of the album.

The vocalist's agonized singing, and the sheer urgency behind it, to pass forward the emotion, desperation, remind me only of such keen spirited madman named Landfermann that did memorable vocals, scarring for life, on the album Bethlehem - Dictius Te Necare, but not the same type of vocals, merely in the pain. His clean vocals do not fall from other singers, and even sounds better at times.

The album's flow is both quick and slow, lacking definition, or the will to be defined, for instance, moments of metalcore in the playing, noise or hopeful riffs. The album is not only slow, not only doom, not only an album. Mar De Grises are genius musicians, and this album is the living-dead monument of it.

Eine doomige Offenbarung aus Chile. Alptraumhafte Zeitlupen-Riffs verbunden mit verwegenen Kreisch Vocals. Aber nur auf dem ersten Ohr, denn die Band hat ein feines Gespür für Dramatik und spielt auch mal mit gothischen Melodielinien, die sich düster in einem verwegen Prog-Sound ein krachig-melancholisches Stelldichein liefern. So endet das durchdringende "to see saturn fall" in einer brachialen Jam Session, die pünktlich zum Einschlag des Saturns ihr letzten Klänglein schlagen. Das folgende "Storm" beginnt mit einem Intro, deren monotones Schlagwerk in verspieltem Balladesk-Rock mündet. Die rauen Vocals, aus den tiefsten Tiefen der Stimmbänder hervorgeholt, vermengen Depression mit einer manischen Melodieführung. Erinnert ein wenig an Fields of The Nephilim, allerdings mit akzentuierten progressiven Passagen dargeboten, die jedoch nicht konträr zur Dunkelheit verlaufen. Die Songs mit teilweise Spielzeiten von über 10 Minuten liefern immer wieder melancholische Ruhepausen. Die atmosphärisch dichten Nebelschwaden werden zu einem langsam fliessenden Lavastrom, der sich während des Songverlaufs erglühend aufbläht, um gleich darauf in einer Kälte zu erstarren, die nichts, aber auch gar nichts als Düsternis zu bieten hat. Laßt euch nicht von Bandnamen und Albumtitel irritieren. Die Jungs hier stammen aus Chile und werden ihre Gründe haben, uns derart aufs Glatteis zu führen. Die musikalische Ausrichtung der Südamerikaner überrascht dann aber doch, denn bislang waren mir fast nur Death und Thrash Bands aus dem wohl schmalsten Land der Erde bekannt gewesen. MAR DE GRISES haben sich hingegen einer krude anmutenden Mischung aus Prog, Doom und Death Metal verschrieben. Die Songs sind also durchgehend langsam (Doom), haben Überlänge, teilweise verschachtelte Strukturen (Prog) und werden neben den klaren, geflüsterten Vocals von tiefen Death Growls endveredelt. Ausufernde Pianosequenzen und Akustikpassagen gibt es gratis obendrauf! Das hört sich jetzt alles komplizierter und anstrengender an, als es letztendlich ist. Das Album läßt sich gut in einem Rutsch durchhören und wird insbesondere die OPETH-Fanschar begeistern. Gegen Ende gibt es ein paar Längen zu begähnen. Trotzdem: gutes Debüt – MAR DE GRISES werden wir im Langzeitgedächtnis abspeichern!

Dei cileni MAR DE GRISES si sa poco dalle nostre parti al momento; ma quando un gruppo realizza un debut-CD di questo calibro, posso solo predire che la situazione cambierà drasticamente. Saprà conquistarsi una prima linea di fans, saprà stupire anche ascoltatori poco avvezzi al loro genere, farà parlare di sè per essere un disco dalla maturità invidiabile, ben oltre quella di un debutto qualsiasi. Lontani dai Paesi natii del doom gotico, dell'elettronica, del folk nordico, delle atmosfere fredde, cosmiche e solenni, hanno concepito una perla grazie al loro approccio multiculturale alla musica. Sono stati capaci di produrre mescolanze di generi rese peculiari grazie all'indubbia competenza dei musicisti stessi. Il feeling dei pezzi è immediato ma non aspettatevi linearità: da subito "The Tatterdemalion Express" si fa notare profondo e ingombrante. Un po' come accadeva nel capolavoro "The Silent Enigma" degli ANATHEMA: si comincia con forti suggestioni nel mare di note e strumenti, si capisce il tutto, ma per andare dentro all'origine del sentimento di ogni pezzo si passa per numerosi piacevoli ascolti. La longevità è, quindi, fuori dubbio.

"El Otro" si presenta enfatica e magniloquente, doom e di ampio respiro malinconico; presto ci si rende conto che ciò che ci aspetta è vario e composito. Contro ogni aspettativa la canzone si tuffa in una meditazione intimistica, con arpeggi di chitarra e basso sorretti dall'atmosfera delle tastiere e parti recitate con voce pulita. Il lamento si rende più intenso con accordi che raggiungono punti d'intensità critica, grazie anche agli assoli 'à la KATATONIA' che ricamano ulteriore atmosfera melodrammatica sul finale sincopato. Un composito discorso musicale all'inizio della successiva "To See Saturn Fall" porta poi ad efficaci rallentamenti ed accelerazioni successive con tastiere onnipresenti a guidare l'atmosfera; nuovamente arpeggi, dal gusto vagamente folk, di nuovo clean vocals ispirate, una sensazione crepuscolare poi trasformata in solennità lamentosa e infine sguinzagliata nel noise incontrollato. L'inizio di "Storm" in qualche modo lenta e progressiva nel suo crescendo tranquillo sembra voler riequilibrare la violenza precedente; si aggiunge nella seconda parte un pianoforte spiazzante, che accompagna un malato mid-tempo. Il tutto affluisce poi in un doom catatonico, ornato di contrappunti chitarristici spettacolari nel sentimento, più ancora che nella tecnica. Ulteriori indugi in questo stile compariranno in "Recklessness", mentre un consistente e davvero apprezzabile gusto per il sinfonico viene confermato nella strumentale "Self Portrait No. 1". Sentirete che non si tratta del solito gruppo con qualche ispirazione velleitaria, ma ambiziosi con buona preparazione e idee in grado di basarsi su una scuola musicale solida. Folle capolavoro è "Be Welcome Oh Hideous Hell", dai cori vertiginosi, senza struttura se non una logica onirica dalla quale emergono pause quasi elettroniche/ambient, accelerazioni di batteria con riverbero e chitarre presenti-assenti come in un gioco di chiaroscuri.
Ottima release nel suo genere, musicisti incredibilmente maturi e dalle idee fuori dal comune, piacevoli e stimolanti. Una scoperta per chi ama classe negli ambiti del gothic-doom degli ANATHEMA prima maniera.

Estranho é no mínimo o adjetivo que podemos apontar em direção ao Mar de Grises, projeto chileno que lança agora via Firebox Records (Finlândia) seu debut álbum "The Tatterdemalion Express", que mostra uma mescla de um Doom Metal denso e mórbido com pitadas Heavy Metal e um vocal totalmente Black Metal ou seja rasgado e ríspido, difícil de definir é o mínimo que podemos dizer à respeito. Faixas longas e intensas, climáticas, progressivas, às vez soa chata, porém com audições prestativas é possível tirar excelentes resultados, por exemplo em "To See Saturn Fall" e em "Storm" é possível surpreender-se com quebradas de ritmo da cozinha executada pelo batera Alejandro Arce e do baixo de Rodrigo Gálvez e um trabalho muito bem feito do tecladista e vocalista Marcelo Rodriguez principalmente nos momentos mais ilúcidos da bolachinha, além da bem executada parte feita pelos guitarristas Sergio Alvarez e Rodrigo Morris. Recomendações que interessados ouçam também "Be Welcome oh Hideous Hell" e "Recklessness". Estranho no mínimo e interessante no máximo.

Also, Tattergreisiges hat dieses düstere Quintett aus Chile absolut nichts am Leibe. Im Gegenteil - die 5 Herren gehen trotz aller Langsamkeit sehr heftig ans Werk. Auch die Chilenen haben sich dem megaschleppenden Doom verschrieben, gehen an die Thematik aber vollkommen anders als ihre Labelkollegen von Tyranny heran. MAR DE GRISES lockern ihre 7, insgesamt knapp einstündig tönenden Epen aber immer wieder mit akustischen Breaks ("El Otro") oder sogar kurzes Up-Tempo-Passagen ("To See Saturn Fall", "Be Welcome Oh Hideous Hell") auf. Der Gesang ist variabler (von düster bis fast clean), MAR DE GRISES verstehen es aber meiner Meinung nach nicht ganz so sehr, die Spannung komplett über die ganze Laufzeit zu erhalten. Prinzipiell ist die Mischung aus Fields Of The Nephilim und Mindrot okay, aber "Recklesseness" oder "Onirica" hauen einen nicht direkt aus dem Sessel. Wer's gerne etwas langsamer angehen lässt, für den sind MAR DE GRISES aber dennoch antestenswert.

This band comes from Chile and it totally dedicated to the doom genre. The 7 tracks clock almost 1 hour! No doubt about the clear production and the handcraft of the musicians. Not afraid to step on some sidepaths the songs breath atmosphere and sensitivity opposite the brutality and dark thought. This album need some listening rounds before you will discover the different layers in the songs. Not a bad debutalbum and these guyz will get an eye on them for sure!

WOW!!! ¿Unos chicos chilenos grabando para un sello finlandés?. Suena muy extraño, a menos de que sean de padres millonarios o se dediquen a turbios negocios…o realmente sean muy buenos. Mejor pongo el CD en el equipo…”

“El Otro”, la primera canción del disco me asustó. No me esperaba esto. Esperaba, por la carátula, a un grupo de heavy progresivo. No sé por qué, pero fue lo que me tincó. Ahora me doy cuenta de que son muy doom. Al tiro se me vino a la mente a Septic Flesh, ese grupo griego que llenaba mis espacios más decadentes y depresivos. Y de a poco siento al escuchar Mar de Grises que la luz se apaga, se hace ténue, que tengo frío (en realidad estaba con la ventana abierta al escribir este review). Suenan una maravilla. Type O Negative habría soñado con un debut así. La batería avasalladora, la guitarra limpia, las voces desordenadas, como si estuvieran arrancándole el corazón a alguien. Las guitarras y el bajo muy bien, el teclado un lujo. Este disco te mantiene pensionado todo el rato, como ver una buena película. Buenos movimientos, primero fuerte, después un largo relajo y después la bomba, para rematar en un espacio muy parecido a Anathema. Así es “El Otro”, apenas la primera canción de este discazo y nada menos que de un grupo chileno. 10 minutos de fuerza incontrolable.

“To See Saturn Fall” es la resurrection de Anathema. Era lo que yo me temía. Anathema ha sacado sus 3 últimos discos muertos, malos. Poperos, sin feeling. Es decir, Anathema murió. Tenía que reencarnarse en algo bueno, genial, fuerte, deprimente, terrible. Eso es Mar de Grises, la reencarnación del “Silent Enigma” de Anathema. Tiene grandes momentos melódicos, otros como una “disonancia” magnética, otros son calma, otros caos.

Esa es la tónica del disco; oscuro, aterrador, poderoso. Los sentidos sucumben ante la majestuosidad de los ambientes creados. Podría seguir describiendo el disco canción por canción, pero quiero dejar que TU los descubras. Mi garantía es que es TODO el disco bueno. Y son chilenos, grabados y mezclados en Chile. Eso es lo mejor. Quiere decir que estamos haciendo las cosas bien.

El interludio de piano, de “Self Portrait nº1” demuestra virtuosismo e ingenio. Calma en la composición, notas claves al hacer algo nuevo. Si pudiera ponerle un 11 en vez de un 10 de nota lo haría. Que alegría.

PD: Hay un par de reviews en internet que le ponen un 7,5 de nota. Están enfermos.

No sé como lo habrán hecho pero lo concibieron, un disco de excelente nivel técnico, sonoro y musical, que invita a viajar a todos las emociones más extremas de la mente.

Mar de grises se dio el tiempo necesario para crear esta joya del arte musical, simplemente la obra prima más esperada por muchas personas. ¡Y valió la pena!.. ya que cumple con todo lo anhelado, y no sólo eso, sino que deja con la sensación de haber escuchado uno de los mejores discos de este “estilo”

El C.D. tiene 7 temas de excelente nivel. Pasando de música de extremas composturas a melodías que te harán transitar en un largo camino a tus sentimientos más intensos.

Destacable es el primer track “el otro” que empieza con una voz desgarradora como si estuviera rompiendo las cadenas que tienen amarrada a la depresión y el dolor, y con la instrumentación de excelente factura que sencillamente te hará sufrir.

Otro destacable es el quinto tema (instrumental) realizado por el tecladista y vocalista de la banda que sirve de introducción par dar al paso al track 6 que nuevamente está lleno de desgarradores sonidos. Que te dejaran impávido ante magna entrega de oscuridad, dolor y bellas melodías que te hará estar inmerso en tu interior buscando la solución a todos tus males.

“The Tatterdemalion Express” es sin duda un disco que no pasara inadvertido, quizás no es un disco que te guste a la primera pero luego de un par de veces sonando en tu reproductor de C.D. será la primera opción a escuchar

Mar de Grises sabe encontrar la fibra perfecta para llevar al límite tus emociones, dentro de bellas y desgarradoras composiciones que simplemente te hará necesitar una vez más escuchar “The Tatterdemalion Express”

Chilean doom metal is hardly a well-known scene in the metal world; but if more bands like Mar de Grises were to pop out of there, then that would surely change. Finnish Firebox Records yet again treat us to some quality doom metal, and once more keep their releases subtly varied: like most other bands on the label, Mar de Grises also have their own distinguishing attributes to set them apart from others in the same genre. _The Tatterdemalion Express_ takes you on a trip to a different world, standing apart from other doom metal albums in a number of ways; it has a sound very much its own, employing a multitude of techniques to achieve its goals, and remaining curiously varied whilst surprisingly consistent throughout. Mar de Grises are one of those rare outfits that manage to avoid sounding like an ordinary band recording an album in some studio; it's as if the album's musical elements were put together by some abstract entity, taking shape from chaos and resulting in _The Tatterdemalion Express_. There is also an important sense of good taste throughout, of not overdoing things or falling into clichés, that greatly contributes to the overall result. The album hovers between interestingly atmospheric and either funereal or moderately progressive melodic doom most of the time, and includes plenty of remarkable passages in the process (especially the outstanding second half of "Storm"). _The Tatterdemalion Express_ is a highly recommended album, possibly the best so far from the excellent Firebox Records; not to be missed by anyone into doom metal, or indeed extreme metal in general.

No hay duda de que logrado Mar de Grises en tan poco tiempo es digno de elogios. Una joven banda chilena que después de un demo logra editar su primer L.P “The Tatterdemalion Express” a través de un sello europeo como Firebox Records no se ve todos los días en nuestra escena.

Lo importante es que acá no hay una suerte de pituto en lo logrado por la banda, simplemente es un reconocimiento a un trabajo mas que meritorio y que no va a pasar desapercibo por lo visto tampoco en calidad musical, de la mano de este disco lleno de un doom bastante oscuro y lleno de fuerza.

“El Otro” es el primer tema de la placa y pone de inmediato las cosas en orden, no dejando lugar a dudas sobre que es lo que nos trata de mostrar esta banda. Una atmósfera cargada que repasa segmentos muy lentos y pausados y otros donde la distorsión cumple su cometido de entregarnos rabia y fuerza. La manera en que esta compuesta cada sección del tema esta mucho mas cerca de lo que en los noventa formaron bandas insignes del estilo como Anathema, Paradise Lost y My Dying Bride (todos en su etapa mas oscura) que lo que ahora se entiende por Doom. La locura vocal de Rodríguez con su impostación desgarrada pone la guinda a la torta en un tema extremadamente largo, pero que no da tiempo de aburrir por sus constantes cambios siempre en la estructura de medio tiempo.

El siguiente tema y que esta prácticamente pegado es “To See Saturn Fall”, y en el se adueñan del principio la melodía al mas puro estilo de My Dying Bride con sendos riffs y punteos de la dupla Morris – Álvarez, para después pasar a un segmento casi acústico donde el fraseo de Rodríguez con una voz limpia y llena de calma ponen un contrapunto preciso. Ya pasado el coro el tema se vuelve ecléctico en una gama de sonidos muy rica y compleja que puede llegar a confundir a quienes no están acostumbrados a tanta distorsión. El ultimo tramo del tema conserva la melodía en las guitarras siendo acompañadas magistralmente por los teclados sin caer en los típicos teclados góticos. Gran tema.

“Storm” refleja muy bien el concepto de su titulo en la atmósfera que crea la banda. Desde el principio Mar de Grises se anota un punto en esto de la mano de la percusión que realiza Arce evocando los sonidos propios de los truenos y todo lo que ello conlleva en sensaciones y texturas sonoras. Impresiona también en el tema nuevamente el trabajo de Rodríguez, quien maneja varias técnicas vocales y tipos de impostación que pasan por susurros, voces limpias e impostaciones guturales, todo esto mezclado nuevamente con punteos y riffs cargados de oscuridad.

El teclado juega un papel primordial en el sonido de “Recklessness”. Le entrega una acabada guía melódica que se mezcla con los riffs y punteos mas duros formando un paralelo muy interesante y evocador a la vez, todo esto conjugado con interesantes juegos vocales y espacios dramáticos intensos de principio a fin. Riquísimo en texturas de principio a fin.

“Self Portrait N°1” se siente muy intimo y melancólico de la mano solamente de un piano que recoge una tradición muy clásica en sonido. El instrumental guarda además una dulzura plena en cada una nota que sobrecoge e invita a la introspección. Una bella pausa pasando la mitad del disco.

“Be Welcome Oh Hideous Hell” vuelve a la línea mas densa en sonidos de la placa. Mucho riffs nuevamente mezclado con sendos punteos muy oscuros y nuevamente con una línea melódica del teclado de fondo. Hacia la mitad existe un nuevo espacio dramático marcado por un quiebre y la oscuridad de los sonidos, que así como van bajando en intensidad después nuevamente comienza a subir hasta enganchar nuevamente con los riffs. Un gran tema con un gran desarrollo de las atmósferas y cambios manteniéndose siempre del medio tempo hacia abajo de la placa.

Al cierre llega “Onirica”, con un inicio acústico en guitarras que se mezcla con la pasividad de la batería. La voz de Rodríguez se siente limpia y lejana, casi cansada, haciendo reflejo en esto del titulo del tema, casi perdida en el sueño. Se siente en este tema cierta influencia en pasajes de la etapa mas antigua de Anathema hasta “Eternity”, en especial en el uso de los teclados como formas evocadoras de atmósferas. Un track lento para el cierre de una placa que no escatima en esfuerzos y tampoco en sentimientos.

Con lo hecho en este trabajo, Mar de Grises se pone a una altura de una banda que escapa al promedio de bandas de nuestra escena, y se toma el puesto de la mejor banda Sudamérica en el estilo Doom, sobrepasando incluso a Poema Arcanus en esto en que muchos los veían como el único material digno de exportación de nuestra escena. Mis felicitaciones a la banda, ya que tienen un futuro demasiado prometedor ya no solo a nivel nacional, sino que internacional.

Un trabajo que tiene todas las de ganar en el exterior y que por lo mismo, merece ser escuchado por los amantes de este estilo no solo en el este país, sino en el mundo entero.

Demás está decir lo grato que resulta ser comentar un disco cuando en este se nota dedicación, profesionalismo y pasión, acompañado de una considerable cuota de técnica, lo que en definitiva se traduce por cierto, en un gran trabajo.

Indudable resulta ser también el duro trabajo que debe haber tras una producción de la calidad de este disco, sobre todo si este es producto de una banda nacional, las cuales deben hacer "una y mil maravillas" en un "medio" como el nuestro, donde cada lanzamiento que se logra es el resultado del trabajo de largos años y gran perseverancia, la que permite soslayar todos los obstaculos impuestos por la vorágine en la que deben moverse nuestras bandas.

Es por estas razones que sin lugar a ninguna duda, y tanto por producción como por la calidad misma de las composiciones, me atrevo a decir que este debe ser uno de los mejores lanzamientos que haya escuchado de una banda nacional.

Se trata de Mar de Grises, banda que viene dando que hablar desde hace un buen tiempo, cultora de un Doom rico en atmósferas y melodías nostálgicas y dramáticas, que hacen las delicias de cualquier fan del género.

The Tatterdemalion Express, su primer larga duración nos muestra a una banda tremendamente madura y profesional, lo cual sumado a la excelente producción lograda, permiten regalarnos 7 excelentes composiciones (en algo menos de 1 hora), a la altura de cualquier banda reconocida dentro del género... y es cierto, con esta producción, Mar de Grises entra a lo grande dentro del mundillo doom.

Temas como el inicial El otro, Storm o Recklessness, por nombrar algunos, nos sumergen dentro de un estado asombroso de desvarío emocional, que nos permite viajar fácilmente por los pasajes más oscuros de la mente... como para escucharlos en total oscuridad. Nota aparte para Self Portrait No. 1, el tema más corto del disco (4:27) y el único totalmente instrumental... un rico pasaje de piano, relajado y agradable, que viene a poner la cuota de tranquilidad al disco.

No olvidemos que la lentitud del género no significa que los temas sean suaves o melosos, al contrario, las atmósferas logradas por Mar de Grises son sumamente densas, pesadas y variadas, lo que se debe en gran medida a que la banda no ha puesto límites a su capacidad compositiva, paseándose por diversas influencias y gamas musicales, creando una amalgama rica en estructuras y melodías disímiles.

Concluyendo, The Tatterdemalion Express constituye un excelente primer disco para Mar de Grises y un prometedor debút internacional. Recordemos que la placa fue lanzada por el sello finés, Firebox Records, lo que en cierta medida augura un buen futuro para la banda, o por lo menos, una buena distribución. Hemos de esperar que así sea.

Die chilenen MAR DE GRISES machen es mir jetzt nicht gerade einfach. Zuvor habe ich die Kritik zu DEVILS WHOREHOUSE geschrieben und nun werde ich mich eingehender mit MAR DE GRISES beschäftigen - "von einem Extrem ins nächste"!!! Erst unverblümter Deathrock und nun Melodicprogdoommetal. Hier wird extrem stimmungsvoller Doomsound gespielt. MAR DE GRISES sind wie Wein - ein guter Wein muss reifen. So ähnlich verhält es sich mit dieser CD, man muss sich damit sehr intensiv auseinandersetzen. Zwischendurch mal schnell ein Song, das ist hier nicht drinnen, da würde ich dann schon eher zu DEVILS WHOREHOUSE greifen. Die CD "The Tatterdemalion Express" eignet sich wohl eher für einen gemütlichen Abend zu Hause. Zu diesen Klängen kann man herrlich abschalten und taucht dabei in eine extrem skurile und melancholische Welt ab!

Auf dieser CD sind 7 Songs und die Gesamtspielzeit beträgt 56,09 Minuten. Die Nummern haben also Überlänge und wer dem nichts abgewinnen kann, sollte einen weiten Bogen um diese CD machen.
An dieser Stelle möchte ich aber noch kurz was zur Band selber sagen. MAR DE GRISES erblickten die Welt im Jahre 2000 und sie entschieden sich für den Doommetal. Allerdings wollten sie sich nicht auf einen einzigen Stil beschränken und daher flossen Elemente aus dem Progressiv, Klassik, Post Rock, Ambient, Electronic, Deathmetal,... in den Gesamtsound ein. Wie soll man nun diese äussert gut produzierte CD umschreiben?
Der Gesang ist sehr varibel, zeitweise wird nur geflüstert und im nächsten Augenblick gröhlt sich der Sänger die Seele aus dem Leib. Ähnlich verhält es sich mit den Gitarristen, mal hört man nur ganz leichte Keyboarduntermalung und im nächsten Augenblick rocken die Gitarren im Stile des 70er Rocks los, um dann in doommetallenes Riffing zu verfallen. Gezielt und gekonnt wird auch der Laut-leise-Effekt eingesetzt.
MAR DE GRISES befindet sich auch fernab jeglichen konventionellen Songaufbaus, alles wirkt total verspielt und dient nur einem Zweck: soviel wie möglich Atmosphäre herzustellen bzw. aufzubauen!
Direkte Vergleiche fallen mir keine ein, so vielschichtigen Sound habe ich bisher selten vernommen.

Zusammenfassend lässt sich sagen, dass MAR DE GRISES ein äusserst interessantes, abwechselungsreiches, anspruchsvolles Debut (!) abgeliefert haben. Einzelne Nummern hervorzuheben, ist ein sinnloses unterfangen. Um die Macht dieser CD aufnehmen zu können, braucht man viel Zeit und Geduld. Um das gesamte Meisterwerk, in seiner Fülle erschliessen zu können, benötigt es mehrere Hördurchlaufe.
Die CD "The Tatterdemalion Express" von MAR DE GRISES dürfte für offene Geister ein gefundenes Fressen sein!

Mann, dass nenn ich langsam. Erst hart und zäh, dann sanft, melodisch und verträumt. Der erste 11-Minuten Song ist vorübergezogen. Die Herren aus Chile machen es den Ohren nicht leicht. Mir gefällt's aber, auch wenn das eher was zum nebenein hören ist (am besten ein Buch gegen Depressionen dazu lesen *haha*). Sehr sehr vielschichtiger und anspruchsvoller Hörgenuss über fast eine Stunde Spielzeit. Ein Geschenk für alle Extrem-Doom Freaks!

Ryhmän junttaama doom on runsasmelodista, raskasmetallista, paikoin progressiivistakin ja jollain tavoin hyvin latinalaista. Mukaan on sumeilematta napattu vaikutteita niin klassisesta kuin huomattavasti nuoremmastakin musiikista, ja elektronisempaakaan ilmaisua ei esikuvia etsiessä ole kavahdettu. Neljällä raidalla seitsemästä kielenä toimii englanti, muissa biiseissä vokalisti Marcelo Rodríguez luottaa äidinkieleensä espanjaan.

Alkajaisiksi tarjoillaan lähes kaksitoista minuuttinen möhkäle El Otro, joka esittelee kiireettömästi edeten lähes koko Mar De Grises-viisikon käyttämän musiikillisen paletin. Raskas kulku on alussa todella murskaavan mahtipontista runsaiden kitaroiden ottaessa tukea möreästä, taustalle sulautuvasta vokalisoinnista sekä tukahduttavasta kosketinmatosta. Kaikki tarvittava on siis periaatteessa läsnä, mutta nopeasti eteneminen muuttuu mihinkään johtamattomaksi suossa tarpomiseksi. Muutaman minuutin raskauden jälkeen tehot tiputetaan osiin ja esiin otetaan akustiset soittimet, mutta taas jäädään junnaamaan paikoilleen. Toki doomin yksi tärkeimpiä ideoita on nimenomaan hidas kehitys ja mantramainen toisto, mutta tällöin pitää olla tarpeeksi potkua mukana ja edes jotain kehitystä pitäisi tapahtua. Nyt kengännumero on aivan liian pieni ja askellus miltei huomaamatonta, kunnon potkuista puhumattakaan.

Heikohkon alun jälkeen alkaa juoni hiljalleen löytyä kun toisena soiva, miltei puolet lyhyempi To See Saturn Fall heitetään tuleen. Tempo nousee välillä jo melkoiseksi (doomin mittakaavassa) ja hyviä ideoita löytyy sieltä täältä, tuntuu kuin ryhmä uudelleenkeksisi itsensä. Tämä sama piinaava epätasaisuus jatkuu halki koko pitkäsoiton, eikä erityisesti tässä musiikintyylissä tarvittavaa eheyttä ja teosmaisuutta pääse syntymään. Siinä missä samalle firmalle levyttävä kotimainen Tyranny onnistui äskettäin sitten julkaistulla debyytillään nostattamaan mieleen vahvoja kuvia ja tunnelmia jää MDG:n kerronta ohuen katkeilevaksi.

Mar De Grises olisi saanut tästä materiaalista reilusti tiivistämällä kasaan tappavan tehokkaan EP:n, mutta pitkäsoittoon eväät eivät vielä riittäneet. No, kyseessä on debyytti ja bändissä on selvästi potentiaalia paljon enempäänkin. Toivotaan että tuo potentiaali pääsee toteutumaan täydessä voimassa jo seuraavalla levyllä.

Whereas the title of this album reads "Express", these Chilean upstarts take you on the scenic route with their brand of atmospheric doom which is as impressively mature as it is mind-blowingly expansive. Mar de Grises somehow manage to fuse the abstract slow-motion horror of funeral doom with the lush melancholy of the more romantic folksy variety, thereby abhorring a vortex of eerie magnificence and crushing beauty.

From its gut-wrenching opening cataclysm, a ride on The Tatterdemalion Express is a trip like no other, taking the listener to a variety of different places both within and without via their sonic evoking of the pure and beautiful, the ugly and obscene. "El Otro" smashes and stomps its way into your consciousness before letting off steam, leaving us with only a solitary piano and some sparse guitar playing to guide us gently back into the abyss. "To See Saturn Fall" is a terrifying uphill journey at a quicker pace, barely skirting the edges of the crevice before triumphantly striding up to a peak of Andean proportions. If "Storm" is the soundtrack to ascending the steep face of an imposing cliff, than "Recklessness" is the descent into the lush valleys.
It might just be the band’s somewhat obscure location (quick! name 10 Chilean metal bands, ok, name 5... 2?), that leads me to these geographic metaphors, but this album really does play like a travelogue through the artist’s conscious and subconscious. It is rare in this scene where extremity, brutality, and obscurity are so heavily valued to find a band that while certainly heavy as all fuck, really allows their emotional identity to shape their performance. Here you will find well-conceived and articulated musical purpose as even in the band’s most chaotic moments there is a synthesis and cohesiveness that has all but disappeared from the world of extreme metal song-writing.

Of course there are individual performances to be commended here as well, most notably that of Marcelo Rodriguez handling the vocal duties, piano and keys. His presence is subdued both in the compositions and the final mix, but his wistful wailing and spare but strong melodies bring an extra, subtle force to the heavier fare wrought by his band-mates. Mar de Grises boast 3 guitar players within their ranks (with Rodrigo on bass, doing a bit of double-duty), so unfortunately I am unable to directly credit the amazing solo that ends "The Storm". Alejandro shows admirable restraint in keeping his percussive work above the fray, allowing the other musicians room to shape the music, but when called upon to come down hard on his kit, he does so with frightening abandon, especially on the song "Be Welcome, Oh Hideous Hell". The album closes with the shifty and spacey "Onirica", and the density and fury which the band has built up the whole album slowly dissolves within the folds of Arce’s methodical drum work and Marcelo’s epic keys.

All in all, The Tatterdemalion Express is as solid a debut album as any fan/band can wish for. The production is solid, allowing the impact of the music to be felt deeply within each listener; while the compelling song-writing and more importantly the sequencing of these songs prevent the listener from getting lost or jaded as is usually the case with a lot of doom albums these days. I would like to end this review by saying something encouraging, like Mar de Grises will be huge or rake in the dollars, but unfortunately that will probably never be the case. It is not that these Chileans are not good enough for the mainstream metal fan, it’s that they are too good for the immature tastes of the mass consumer. Those who truly explore metal, those who do choose to seek out this recording will find a treasure of immeasurable value in the heart of the Andes.

Temas extensos, tortuosos y de gran calidad interpretativa componen el nuevo disco de Mar de Grises de nombre “The Tatterdemalion Express”. Este disco sucesor del ya conocido “Promo 2002” viene a consolidar la carrera de esta banda de Doom que ha sido fichada por el sello Finlandés Firebox con quienes editaron este trabajo a principios de este año.

Con una duración de casi una hora, este trabajo compuesto de 7 temas, nos transporta por un melancólico paraje de melodías que a ratos puede extraviar a más de algún oyente.

Sencillamente un disco para escuchar con atención y armado de cierto ánimo, quienes esperen brutalidad busquen en otro lado, ya que los temas de “The Tatterdemalion Express”, aunque algunos conocidos, de seguro no serán de fácil digestión por aquellos metaleros acostumbrados a melodías más rápidas y menos agónicas.

Mar de Grises denota cierta maduración dentro de su componer, pasajes cambiantes y poco predecibles son la tónica de todo este disco, destacando de muy buena manera la calidad musical de cada integrante.

El mejor sonido que posee “The Tatterdemalion Express”, en comparación a su demo, hace destacar de manera importante la voz en cada tema. Cual venida de ultratumba, cada frase esbozada con una agonía única genera una atmósfera lúgubre que acompaña de maravilla la composición en todos y cada uno de los temas de este trabajo.

El gran desempeño de Batería y Teclado en este disco destaca en todo momento siendo en ocasiones apabullante dentro de cada tema, sumándole a esto las bases de guitarra y bajo que hacen el escuchar este disco un deber.

Para quienes escucharon con cierto gusto el “Promo 2002” de Mar de Grises, creo que disfrutaran enormemente con las limpias versiones de “Reclessness” y “Storm" por su bien preparado sonido (No podíamos esperar menos de este disco.).

Del disco hay mucho que destacar, desde el sonido hasta la interpretación, pasando por voces, instrumentos y otros tantos detalles que estan de más nombrar. Pero deteniéndonos específicamente en los temas, es posible que muchos de los oyentes destaquen y rescaten de sobre manera los tracks 2 y 6 de este trabajo de nombres “To See Saturn Fall” y “Be Welcome Oh Hideous Hell” en los que se mezclas inigualablemente pasajes densosmelancólicos con bases rápidas y sólidas.

En resumen, todo amante del buen Doom tiene como deber hacerse de una copia de este disco, y para aquellos no acostumbrados a este tipo de música solo un consejo. Dense el tiempo de escuchar este disco para luego juzgar.

Chalk another one up for Firebox Records! And Chile, who has heretofore given us the great Poema Arcanus, yields another outstanding Doom Metal outfit from its unexpected regions!

“The Tatterdemalion Express” is the debut of Mar de Grises (“Sea of Gray”), and it is one hell of a debut! The first track, “El Otro”, delivers some quality modern Doom Metal ala early Anathema, complimented with yearning growls of a higher-pitch and clearer tone, with spots of heavy lower-pitch intensity. The song then transcends into shapes of spatial ambience and haunting dreamscapes, where we hear cleaner vocals that portray the gruff voice of a broken man in his cry for salvation. The band then moves into progressive eighth note time signatures and sweeping epic melodies not unlike Opeth. It is this song, in addition to others, that shows us the band spares no expense of time in developing their compositions into what are sometimes 10+ minute odysseys. By track two, “To See Saturn Fall”, we are hearing more of these sweeping and haunting melodies and brilliant Doom Metal harmonies. All with the varying vocals that make Marcelo one of the best today! This song also features one of the most dramatic break-down sections I have ever heard, from which the band recovers into more epic riffing. Another side of the band’s musical personality is introduced on tracks 3 and 4, “Storm” and “Recklessness”. The first thing that comes to mind is the Gothic imaginings of German greats Love Like Blood, but there is more here…piercing guitar harmonies over a crawling meter that brings to mind My Dying Bride, and enchanting keyboards. Track 4, in particular, showcases my truly favorite thing about this album…Marcelo’s “clean” vocals. They are the most brilliant and refreshing vocals I have heard in a long, long time….a mix of Carl McCoy of Fields of the Nephilim and Richard Butler of Psychedelic Furs/Love Spit Love. Track 5, “Self Portrait No 1”, is a haunting piano composition that even Pink Floyd would be proud of. It displays both technical ability by singer Marcelo on the keys, and heartbroken melodies that will disturb your soul. “Welcome Oh Hideous Hell”, the sixth track, is another surprise…faster, more aggressive riffing that I can not help but attribute to some Black Metal influence, along with some more syncopated rhythms, beautifully sung melodies, and an atmospheric interlude that summons a cold and vacant feeling in your heart. “Onirica”, the seventh and final track, starts as a floating and lulling soundscape, whispering to you, but moves in and out of what I would best describe as the sound of a child’s nightmare. This track also reminds us that the lyrics are written both in the band’s native tongue and English.

Mar de Grises displays no lack of musical composition and technical prowess, and this debut album, complimented with original and inspiring artwork, is one that any fan of dynamic and atmospheric Metal would be proud to own.

Highlight Tracks: 2. “To See Saturn Fall” 3. “Storm” 4. “Recklessness”

One of the least likely countries, Chile, produces one of the most powerful debuts this year will see, as Mar De Grises release their full fledged album unto the doom-loving world through Firebox records (who else?) With this effort the band waves the South American doom banner high and proves that modern doom is still an evolving genre where there is room for a broad spectrum of sound.

As became clear on the self-titled demo of the band, they play Doom/Death, but in a very original fashion that was perfected on this album. Above all Mar de Grises play dynamic music, which ranges from crushing heaviness to culminating emotion to delicate fragility. It is rich in tempo changes, solos, varied vocals and exciting through and through. The melody is a very important element, and it is borne by the guitar leads and the keyboards, of which the latter are exceptionally well suited to this type of music.

A bit of criticism goes out to the lyrics, where the English isn't always entirely as it should be, but on the whole this doesn't make a big difference and other bands, Shape of Despair for example, have been known to get away with such things as well because of the quality of the music. Mar de Grises have no trouble whatsoever meeting that criterion.

Highlights of the album are the beginning of 'El Otro', which approaches Funeral Doom and the wonderful 'Storm', which was redone for this album, along with 'Recklessness'. The subtly climaxing 'Onírica' is the perfect end for this album, which will prove to be one of the better debuts of the year.

This is a must-have for anyone seriously into modern Doom/Death and for fans of Funeral Doom as well.

Mar de Grises is a Atmospheric Doom Metal band from Chile. This album called The Tatterdemalion Express contains 7 songs of very Atmospheric and slow Doom. Sometimes when i hear some riffs than i have to think about the band Desire, but you also can hear some progressive things on this album. you also can hear beautiful keyboard riffs, guitar riffs, vocals and slow drums. For people who like also progressive metal than they have to listen to album its an great. Well about the songs. there first song El otro is in there on languege and there last song called Onírica as well. The rest of the songs are all in english. I like all songs but there last song Onírica is the best song i think. All songs are very Atmosperic and Progessive this is a great band.

Fra Chile kommer bandet som bærer navnet Mar De Grises, som har gitt ut en cd med det finurlige navnet The Tatterdemalion Express. På presseskrivet jeg har mottatt står det at bandet spiller opp til melodisk prog. doom metal. Akkurat det skal jeg ikke si så mye på jeg.
Vel, det er utrolig vakkert det bandet leverer og det er en meget bra debut de leverer! Doom er det så definitivt, og det er bra! Keyboard og piano er med å skape vakre stemninger og de varierer bruken godt! Bandet gjør som de føler for og får det til å høres bra ut.
Det går ikke fullt så tregt som for eksempel Tyranny når Mar De Grises spiller, tempo skifter ofte og til tider går det meget fort i svingene.
De veksler mellom growling og renvokal, noe som gir variasjon. Musikken også er veldig variert, så ja, man kan si at Mar De Grises er progressive sånn sett, det er ikke ren Doom, men en blanding av mange stilarter.
Det er veldig mye vakker musikk på The Tatterdemalion Express, men jeg merker at jeg etter hvert begynner å kjede meg. Jeg har merket meg de sangene/partiene jeg liker godt og hører på dem, men hele skiva på en gang blir litt kjedelig.
Men ALLE må sjekke ut partiet som kommer etter 6 minutter i låten "Storm", et utrolig vakkert parti spør du meg!!!
Jeg har hørt gjennom skiva mange ganger og vekslet mellom karakterer, men havnet til slutt på en sterk firer!

SÅ, alt i alt er det en meget variert plate med hovedbase på Doom! Utrolig mye vakkert å fange opp, men jeg detter dessverre litt av. Men sjekk den ut, for all del!

Strana davvero la proposta musicale di questi Mar De Grises, band cilena attiva da poco più di tre anni che si presenta per la prima volta sul mercato discografico con un album di non facile assimilabilità e catalogazione. "The tatterdemalion express" è infatti composto da sette tracce che, per le loro caratteristiche specifiche, sono difficilmente riconducibili ad un filone musicale ben preciso. Quello che le accomuna è il fatto che ognuna di esse, a suo modo, ci propone sonorità molto oscure e goticheggianti o, in alternativa, melodie dolci e malinconiche. I generi tramite i quali il gruppo riesce a trasmettere tali sensazioni sono prevalentemente il doom e il death: a questi ultimi viene riservato uno spazio molto ampio all'interno del disco, ma in più di un'occasione in esso c'è anche posto per influenze di diverso tipo, come ad esempio quelle del prog, del gothic, dell'ambient o addirittura del post rock. Immagino che per i Mar De Grises non sia stato semplice assemblare dei brani così complessi, e soprattutto riuscire a dare una compattezza a tutto l'insieme sonoro presente in questo cd, però ammetto che ci sono riusciti abbastanza bene per essere solamente un gruppo agli esordi. Non si può parlare di un risultato eccellente in quanto rimane una certa discontinuità di fondo che frena in parte il potenziale comunicativo di "The tatterdemalion...", ma è certo che alcuni suoi episodi appaiono più che convincenti, per esempio l'intensa e cupissima "Recklessness" e l'altrettanto emozionante "Be welcome oh hideous hell", un pezzo piuttosto complicato strutturalmente che ricorda in parte i primi Katatonia. Non male neanche brani più rilassanti come il conclusivo "Onírica" e "Self portrait no 1", che però con il metal hanno ben poco a che fare, essendo essi molto più vicini al post rock (il primo) e alla musica classica (il secondo). In linea generale si può quindi parlare di una band con dei discreti mezzi espressivi e dotata di buone capacità tecniche, che non a caso ha attirato immediatamente l'attenzione della Firebox Records (un'etichetta che negli ultimi tempi si è distinta per aver pubblicato gli album di debutto di ottimi gruppi come gli Swallow The Sun e i Tyranny), con la quale ha firmato un contratto per la realizzazione di due cd. Diciamo che per adesso troppo entusiasmo per questa release sarebbe ingiustificato, ma se non altro i Mar De Grises hanno dimostrato che anche le misconosciute scene di paesi della cosiddetta "periferia del mondo" possono avere molte cose interessanti da offrire.

These times there is much crappy stuff being released under the Doom Metal flag; but, in my opinion, they are nothing more than pop bands with naive vocals, but no feeling at all. So, here comes from Chile this band called Mar de Grises playing a quality Doom Metal – they add something to the style. This album is a gift – coming with seen excellent compositions: “El Otro”, “To See Saturn Fall”, “Storm”, “Recknelessness”, “Self Portrait no 1”, “Be Welcome Oh Hideous Hell”, and “Onírica”. I couldn’t say which one is the best; it’s a perfect album! Their music’s main characteristics are the shadowy, and dark melodies, plus some progressive and experimental influences. But don’t think they step out of their main proposal – indeed, it makes “The Tatterdmalion Express” to sound even more interesting. One of the best releases these past years.

Às vezes as maiores surpresas surgem de onde menos esperamos. Quem pensa que os estilos de Metal mais depressivos e melancólicos são sempre oriundos dos países escandinavos, tem aqui a prova do contrário. Os Mar De Grises praticam um Doom Metal atmosférico e algo progressivo que me deixou espantado não só pela qualidade que ostenta como pelo desespero que demostra.«The Tatterdemalion Express» é apenas o álbum de estreia deste colectivo de voz, baixo, bateria, teclados e duas guitarras, que vai ao longo do álbum tecendo uma complexa mas bela tapeçaria de partes distintas de Doom Metal, paisagens sonoras ambientais e partes progressivas e técnicas de ritmos e guitarra. É, sobretudo, o aspecto desolado da música de Mar De Grises que melhor enquadra toda esta variedade, e que me fez pensar mais do que uma vez em Maudlin Of The Well nas vezes em que ouvi o disco, sobretudo pela maneira como a banda utiliza os teclados na sua música. Existem ainda coisas a melhorar, principalmente nos arranjos de algumas partes, mas em termos gerais «The Tatterdemalion Express» cumpre o seu objectivo, e bem. É um excelente trabalho de Doom Metal melancólico, ambiental e progressivo, variando entre o Metal e o não-Metal de uma forma quase perfeita e roçando a loucura nas partes mais intensas. Soberbo.

Increíble debut de estos chilenos en CD ,si ya su anterior demo me había gustado mucho este álbum es una maravilla para los oídos... pura ambientación de melancolía y depresión .Su música te transporta por medio de teclados ,voces llenas de dolor guturales o limpias y por punteos de guitarra armoniosamente melancólicos, al centro de un mundo deshabitado. Es como adentrarse en un paisaje desolado lleno de naturaleza muerta; es como el reflejo de un cielo gris en un mar enfurecido; como ver el sol tras un velo negro; es el viento gélido en la cara. Todas estas imágenes puedes hallarlas a través de su música, junto a estos pasajes ambientales su mundo está lleno de partes melancólicas y alguna que otra aceleración musical.
Para que os podáis hacer una idea Mar de Grises es como si escucharas a los Anathema en el Silent Enigma pero más lentos y con estructuras mucho más complejas pero siempre bajo un sonido propio, digno de mención. Digamos que el concepto de su música sería: la profunda depresión que lo abarca todo, las ganas insaciables de dejar de existir y el dolor extremo que significa tu existencia.
Cualquier persona que disfrute de la música cargada de altas dosis de sentimiento y llena de ambientación debería hacerse con este álbum.
Si siguen así acaba de nacer un grupazo.

Finska Firebox zawsze kojarzyla mi sie z mniej lub bardziej ukierunkowanymi na Doom Metal kapelami. Jesli chodzi o chilijski Mar De Grises, to wlasciwie nie odbiega od norm wyznaczonych przez katalog Finów.

Tak naprawde,. Na ‘The Tatterdemalion Express’ mamy mnóstwo progresywnych pasazy, które zdecydowanie odbiegaja od konwencji Doom Metalu. Owszem, - smutny, ciezki, pogrzebowy Metal nadal stanowi dla Chilijczyków kregoslup muzyczny ich poczynan, ale do propozycji Mar De Grises wdziera sie mnóstwo odmiennych elementów. Ambient, progresywny Metal, troche klasyki i gotyku – to tylko kilka przykladów, aby nie byc goloslownym. Slychac, ze Mar De Grises to wielki eksperyment, a ‘The Tatterdemalion Express’ stanowi znakomicie dopracowany konglomerat stylów i inspiracji jego twórców. Zapewne zdajecie sobie sprawe, ze te 7 utworów to prawie godzina zlozonej, wymagajacej skupienia muzyki. Muzyki pelnej dziwnych dzwieków, niecodziennych rozwiazan i dalekich od tego, co serwuje nam radio i telewizja.

Mar De Grises to bez watpienia zespól, który warto polecic wszystkim lubujacym sie w dobrej muzyce. Zaczynam sie czego jest tutaj wiecej – Metalu czy wszystkich innych ambitnych gatunków. Warto!

Have you ever thought of an album, which contains a combination of doom-death metal, progressive rock, classical and electronic music performed just by a single band? Are you open-minded enough and you want a doom metal album mixed with different metal and non-metal styles? If your answer is positive, then its time to listen to the debut album of the Chilean Mar De Grises. The band was formed between September 2000 and July 2001 and because of the shared musical influences its members decided to take a doom-death metal oriented path, but trying not to limit their spectrum of expression. Did this decision bring the expected good results? I think yes, as I let my mind being carried away by the dark sounds of the album titled “The Tatterdemalion Express” which contains seven tracks full of passion, sorrow and gloomy emotions. Can you imagine yourself being in the middle of a funeral during a rainy day? That’s how you’ll probably feel as you’re listening to the depressing songs of the album and that feelings are very welcomed by the real doom metal funs. The guitars sound like crying, the vocals vary between doom and death style but the best part are the keyboards, which add a great and mournful melodic sound. Just listen the track “Self Portrait No1”, a fine piano solo that could easily be a classical track or a movie soundtrack. Personally, I can only express an objection about the length of some tracks (could be shorter) and the production, which could be more clear and loud in some parts of the songs (for example in piano solo’s). Putting aside these flaws, the whole album is very good and shows that mixing different styles can sometimes be very interesting.

Das finnische Label Firebox scheint sich zu einem feinen Treffpunkt der internationalen Doom Szene zu mausern, denn nach dem beeindruckenden Swallow the Sun Debüt präsentiert uns diese ambitionierte Plattenfirma gleich ihre nächste Entdeckung namens Mar de Grises. Gegen jene allerdings wirken eingangs erwähnte Labelkollegen wie Darkthrone gegen Emperor. Der Versuch, diese chilenische Band mit einer anderen zu vergleichen, scheitert kläglich, denn ihre Kompositionen sind so vertrackt, komplex und durchstrukturiert, dass jeder Durchlauf wie eine Herausforderung scheint. "El Otro", der Opener der Scheibe, ist ein Monstersong von über zehn Minuten und zugleich auch der sperrigste des ganzen Albums. Durch die absolut gelungene Produktion gelingt es, die Musik einerseits bombastisch, andererseits zerbrechlich erklingen zu lassen, denn zwischen den zahlreichen pompösen Extrem-Doom Parts kommen immer wieder zögerliche Pianointermezzi und Akustikgitarren vor. Es wimmelt nur so vor ungeraden Takten und abgehobenen Arrangements, und meist weiß man am Ende eines Songs nicht mehr, wie dieser eigentlich begonnen hat. Ein gutes Beispiel hierfür wäre "To see Saturn fall". Es ist eine Freude anzuhören, wie sich das Stück in abstrakten Klangwelten verliert, danach aber wieder zu einem imposanten Gebilde aus Gitarrenwänden und Melodien zusammenfindet. Verdammt nahe der Genialität liegen auch die Gitarrenleads in "Storm". Für etwas Auflockerung sorgt das emotionale Pianolied "Self Portrait No. 1".
Die Vocals werden eher dazu verwendet, die Gesamtatmosphäre zu unterstützen, denn von ihnen wird nicht besonders häufig Gebrauch gemacht. Neben krächzendem Sprechgesang und vereinzelten Grunzpassagen findet man auch immer wieder klar gesungene Passagen, doch auch gesanglich kann man Mar de Grises nicht mit konventionellen Richtlinien vergleichen.
Mein einziger Kritikpunk ist die Gesamtlänge des Albums. Value for money - schön und gut, aber kein Mensch kann sich 56 Minuten lang auf sieben Songs konzentrieren, erst recht nicht bei so vielschichtiger und komplizierter Musik, doch gerade "The Tatterdemalion Express" ist ein Album, das als Ganzes gehört werden will.

Tremendo. Sin palabras! Para quienes aun no conocen a esta banda chilena, que vive su mejor momento, tomen nota.
Hace varios meses que estaba esperando escuchar un adelanto de lo que sería el álbum debut de los Doomers chilenos, Mar de Grises. Personalmente se me había creado una expectativa súper grande con este disco. Lo logrado en su demo debut fue brillante para cómo se hizo (que fue grabado en vivo y duró 40 minutos). Los comentarios de aficionados y seguidores del Doom entendieron perfectamente que Mar de Grises era una nueva apertura dentro del sonido local. Su propuesta abrió mentes y dejó entrever que no es necesario hacer siempre el mismo tipo de Doom melancólico. Ellos experimentaron y llevaron al límite sus conocimientos logrando capturar -como muy pocos o han hecho- la esencia de la música en canciones exquisitas y llenas de emoción. Llegaron al corazón de ella y la moldearon en una estructura con peso, fuerza, intensidad y mucho sentimiento.
? Y la espera valió la pena ?. Gracias al acertado ojo del sello Firebox de Finlandia (en donde encontrarán a Swallow The Sun, como otra gran atracción), Mar de Grises entra a grabar de la mano del ingeniero de sonido Raphaël França, "The Tatterdemalion Express" (algo así como "El expreso de la desgracia), un registro lleno de emociones puras que plasman en siete largas y complejas canciones que casi alcanzan la hora de música, logrando un sonido ejemplar y digno de expertos en la materia. Para aser un debut, vaya como quedó este disco. ?Suena excelente!.
Describir a esta banda tampoco es tarea fácil. Sus canciones son duras y complejas. Sin esa facilidad del Doom que por ejemplo hacen grupos más simples y efectivos. "To See Saturn Fall" (segundo track) está lleno de cambios, ritmos y melodías. La fragilidad de la voz de Marcelo (quien además toca el teclado) pasa de un lado a otro. Melódica, normal, carraspeada, y no sigue un parámetro determinado. Es inesperada, como así también la música, que a momentos logra acercarse al caos y el desencanto. (como al final del mismo corte). Otro de los cortes que destaca por su diversidad es "Be Welcome Oh Hideous Hell". Acá el baterista Alejandro Arce acude a la velocidad y destreza de su técnica dándole matices diferentes al sonido. Cabe destacar que Arce ha estado metido en varios grupos ya sea colaborando y/o grabando (Kintral, Atomic Noise Machine, Angor, Norphelida, entre otros).
A veces me sale a la mente la banda inglesa Anathema. Y si bien es cierto Mar de Grises no tiene una marcada influencia de nadie en particular, sí muestra extractos de sonidos similares a la banda mencionada. "Storm", "Recklessness" (estos dos vienen en el demo), "El Otro", "Self Portrait Nol", "Be Welcome Oh Hideous Hell" y "Onirica" completan esta obra maestra del Doom nacional que sin dar descanso, se convertirá rápidamente entre las mejores de su género en el ámbito Chileno, y por qué no decirlo Internacional.

Doom is not known for being the most experimental or progressive genre of metal, but don’t tell that to Mar De Grises. It seems they have set out to make music that is not classifiable in any of the neatly carved niches that make up the familiar sub-genres of doom metal that we are used to. If pressed for comparisons to this album, I would perhaps mention such avant garde endeavors as Arcturus - La Masquerade Infernale, Green Carnation - Journey to the End of the Night, and possibly even Opeth - My Arms, Your Hearse. If these comparisons seem confusing, it’s because I myself am a little confused about what I just listened to.

This is not “weird” in the same sense as some of the other bands I’ve reviewed before. It is weird in the sense that the song structures imitate the perceived randomness of emotion and of life itself. The music seems to have a mind of its own, growing and developing like an organic entity and often behaving sporadically. Yet somehow the listener is forced to accept these contortions as nothing out of the ordinary.

This mysterious opus is pretty well split between distorted and clean sections, with each maintaining an ominous, fretful atmosphere and a relatively slow pace most of the time. The use of clean, reverb-enriched guitars with heavy drumming is something I haven’t heard much of before. Occasionally the music breaks down into nothing but a clean guitar or piano melody, then slowly builds back up again. The distorted sections create a deep, churning atmosphere of murky heaviness, culminating in beautifully layered melodies, with keyboards sometimes creeping in as well. I like the fact that the production is not crystal clear - this helps to give the music a dreamy and somewhat undefined quality, ensuring that all of its secrets will not be given out on the first listen.

The vocals are very distant in the mix, ranging from desperate screams and growls to mid-range clean vocals that border on a whisper. 90% of the lyrics are indecipherable. From an aesthetic standpoint, the vocals are just another element caught in this oppressive storm. This is down-in-the-dirt doom metal with its gaze affixed in the clouds, longing for some elusive something.

Wenn ein Wort im Albumtitel eindeutig verkehrt ist, dann das Wort "Express". Eilig haben es hier die Chilenen garantiert nicht! Das sagt eigentlich schon die Spielzeit aus, die mit nur sieben Songs schon derart lange ist. Gegründet so zwischen 2000 und 2001 (genaueres weiß das Label auch nicht) haben die Jungs ein Demo (2002) eingespielt, bevor sie 2004 bereits das zweite Lebenszeichen in Form des Debuts von sich gaben.

Wie oben schon erwähnt, hat man es hier gaaaaaaaar nicht eilig. Also hat man sich dem Doom verschrieben. Wer hier nun aber brachiale slow-motion Dampfwalzen erwartet, wird enttäuscht. Das Label umschreibt das ganze als melodischen progressiven Doom Metal. Nun ja, der Meinung kann ich nur bedingt zustimmen. Progressiv ist das eigentlich nicht, was hier geboten wird. Zumindest machen in meinen Ohren ein paar schräge Piano Klänge am Ende eines Songs noch keine Progressivität aus. Melodisch ist das ganze zwar schon, aber eher noch kann man das ganze als zerbrechlich einstufen. Sehr fein strukturiert und filigran kommt das ganze aus den Boxen mit einem ganz großen Schuss Depressivität. Dabei hat man auf die Texte wohl nicht wirklich viel Wert gelegt, werden die Vocals doch eher zurückhaltend eingestreut, fast schon als notwendiges Beiwerk (oder aber als Mittel zum Zweck). Über weite, weite Strecken dominiert hier die instrumentale Fraktion klar das Geschehen.

Dies ist garantiert kein Album zum so nebenbei hören. Will man die einzelnen Feinheiten raushören, muss man sich schon intensiver mit dem Album beschäftigen. Alles in allem ein gutes Debut, wenn auch noch nicht der ganz große Wurf, den uns das Label hier wieder weismachen will.

This debut sounds quite promissing. The atmospheric doom metal proposed by the Chilean band MAR DE GRISES is pretty inspired and well-made, combinating clear and death vocals, progressive tunes and ambient waves. Unfortunately the whole stuff sounds a bit too ambient and fells deep into monotony little by little, a bit like the first albums of the Irish band MORNING BELOVETH. It's too bad 'cus you'll easily find some wonderful parts all along the album (the last 2 minutes of "To see saturn fall" for example), but it's quite hard to be really catched by the music as we can be by MY DYING BRIDE for example. Each cool minute is broken by one other exemptable minute, so that the result's too easy to improve. I really hope that the following album will take me to some distant landscapes for this one just let me asleep in my seat... sorry, but good luck anyway.

Ein schöner Titel für eine schöne Platte. Wühlten die Bands des Firebox Labels bis jetzt gerne im Schlamm und gruben sich durch Schichten aus Schmutz und Dreck am Grunde eines bodenlosen Tränenmeeres, so sind MAR DE GRISES die schimmernde Perle, welche dort seit unermesslichen Äonen auf seinen Entdecker gewartet hat, geduldig, doch voller Sehnsucht.

Tatsächlich darf man hier nicht Doom mit Depression gleichsetzen. Den ganzen weiten Weg aus Chile kommt er gefahren, der Tatterdemalion Express und hat an den von sanftem Sprechgesang und geflüstertem Gitarrengeschnurre umwehten Strassenlaternen Reykjaviks bei Nacht genauso Halt gemacht wie an den von stürmisch galoppierenden Hengsten und schemenhaften Gestalten des Zwielichts bewohnten Wäldern Norwegens. Man muss ja auch nicht, wie das Presseinfo, gleich eine ganze Schatztruhe an Assoziationen ausschütten, die von Ambient über Death bis hin zu Progressive reichen, sondern kann die Dinge auf einen einfachen Nenner bringen: Emotionaler Rock ist das, in allen Schattierungen und Farben, ohne Vorurteile oder Grenzen. Alles dauert lange hier, die Stücke beginnen klein, bauschen sich immer mehr auf, kehren aber immer wieder in den Zustand der Ruhe zurück, aus dem sie kamen. Auch die Stimme Marcelo Rodriguez bewegt sich nie vollständig an eine der beiden entgegengesetzten Pole, ist stets zu leise, um verstanden zu werden und zu unmenschlich, um Vertrauen zu erwecken – es ist, als lausche man in einem von Serienmördern bewohnten Motel in der Einöde Amerikas den Gesprächen im Nachbarzimmer. In der Mitte des Albums wird bei „Recklessness“ beinahe konventionell geprügelt, doch die unterweltliche Klavieretüde „Self Portrait no 1“ zieht einen mit langen, knochigen Fingern wieder zu Boden. Ganz zum Schluss wird noch die Lavalampe ausgepackt, die Gitarre malt wirre Muster an die Wand, die Augen fallen einem zu und es ist, als höre man die Engel von SIGUR ROS aus dem Grab tuscheln.

Soviel Schönheit muss man ertragen können. Soviel Abwechslung im Übrigen auch: Mit Ausnahme des stets sehr stark im Hall dröhnenden Schlagzeugs steht jedes Kapitel in diesem spannenden Buch für eine eigene und neue Herangehensweise. Die Dinge sind nie wie sie scheinen: Wer lange genug an der makellosen Oberfläche dieser Perle reibt, wird auch zu den dunklen und dreckigen Geheimnissen vorstossen, die sich darunter verbergen.

Eine chilenische Band auf einem finnischen Label, die Welt scheint wirklich immer enger zusammen zu rücken.... Im Info steht etwas von Doom mit Einflüssen aus u.a. Prog, Klassik, Ambient und ich hab natürlich gleich das Allerschlimmste vermutet, Kastratengesang mit Traumtheatergefrickle. Hab mich aber glücklicherweise getäuscht, die CD nervt überhaupt nicht, andererseits fällt es auch schwer einen schnellen Zugriff zu bekommen, der erste Song „El Otro“ ist schon 12 Minuten lang. Der Hinweis auf Klassik trifft schon eher als der Prog-Verweis, immer mal wieder sind ausgedehnte Klavierpassagen eingewoben. Gesanglich über weite Strecken wie alte Paradise Lost und ab und an musste ich auch an Fields of the Nephilim oder Anathema denken. Auch von der Intensität und Geschwindigkeit pendelt die Band zwischen sehr ruhigen, atmosphärischen Passagen und gelegentlich dann auch einem ordentlichen Brett. Muss man definitiv öfter hören, ists aber auch wert Zeit zu investieren. (tj)

La finlandese Firebox continua la sua marcia inarrestabile alla ricerca di nuove entità doom ed in questa sua avanzata non sembra conoscere limiti geografici di sorta, tanto è vero che questi Mar De Grises provengono direttamente dal Cile, una delle nazioni dove meno ci si aspetterebbe di trovare suoni rallentati all’inverosimile ed allo stesso tempo profondamente evocativi. Presentatisi al mondo con un demo che raccolse più di un consenso, questi cileni ci propongono un doom/death che spesso si perde nei meandri di trame sonore ai limiti della psichedelica, tanto da far perdere l’ascoltatore in un dedalo di suoni e sensazioni stranianti e disorientanti. Arpeggi, assoli e stacchi progressive rendono il songwriting dinamico e ricco di spunti, spezzando l’incedere monolitico e statico dei brani per un risultato che in alcuni casi (vedi la strabiliante parte finale del primo brano) rischiano di far saltare sulla sedia per la sorpresa. Certo, nel complesso, la proposta non è di facile fruizione e rischia di dilungarsi eccessivamente in intricati labirinti di note, laddove una maggiore esperienza e concretezza avrebbero fatto optare per una minore voglia di stupire. Eppure non può che far piacere vedere come questa band decida di seguire una strada densa di ostacoli e pericoli pur di dar vita ai propri sogni visionari, lasciando l’ascoltatore in uno stato di annichilimento e di incredulità, spesso arrivando a trasportarlo bruscamente da lidi prettamente doom a partiture dilatate ed asimmetriche, degne -come dicevamo- di una band prog in pieno trip settantiano. Un disco che riconferma le qualità della Firebox, una label coraggiosa e di qualità, uno dei nomi da tenere d’occhio per gli amanti delle sonorità più oscure.

Jos kanadalainen Rush on älykkään miehen heavy-bändi, silloin Chilestä kotoisin oleva Mar De Grises on perustellusti älykkään miehen tuomiometallibändi. Yhtye ei tyydy yksisilmäiseen hitaaseen örinään ja riffisoutamiseen, vaan täyttää kappaleensa runsailla efekteillä ja sävyillä. Viime vuoden maaliskuun ja lokakuun välisenä aikana purkitettu "The Tatterdemalion Express" sekoittaa yhteen eri musiikkityylejä, mutta muistaa hyvin tuomiometallijuuret. Jälki on paikoin hyvin laadukasta. Synkkä raita "Storm" kohoaa albumin majesteetillisimmaksi teokseksi.****

Mar de Grises onnistuu hämmentämään debyytillään. Bändi paiskoo doomin ja deathin välimaastossa seikkailevaa lyijynraskasta metallia jolle ei juuri vertailukohteita löydy. Hyvinkin progressiiviset kappalerakenteet ja keskelle kappaleita sijoitetut ambient-kohdat sekä sinne tänne siroteltu päätön möykkä ovat varsin todellisuudesta vieraannuttavaa kuunneltavaa.

Mar de Grises ei rakenna kappaleitaan riutuvien kitaramelodioiden tai runsaiden kosketinmattojen varaan vaikka niitäkin levyllä kuullaan. Sen sijaan musiikista huokuva aitous ja valtaisat tunteet pitävät kuulijaa tiukasti otteessaan. Laulajan sydämeen käyvä tulkinta on parasta mitä olen kuullut pitkään aikaan. Aivan kuin Mar de Grisesin musiikki olisi sävelletty partaterä konkreettisesti ranteella, niin painostavaa tunnelmaa bändi silloin tällöin onnistuu luomaan. Levyllä on silti negatiivisetkin puolensa vaikka ne eivät suuria olekaan. Vaikka laulaja ilmaiseekin itseään pääosan ajasta todella upeasti, on lyriikoista vaikea saada selvää edes kansilehdykän kanssa laulajan mumistessa jossain kitaravallien välissä. Myöskään kappaleiden rakenteettomuus ei aina miellytä, punainen lanka katoaa liiankin usein.

Mar de Grises ei tee musiikkiinsa tutustumista helpoksi, mutta jos uhraa albumille hieman kärsivällisyyttä, on palkintona levyllinen todella tunnepitoista, upeaa ja omaperäistä musiikkia. Jos vuosi olisi hieman pidemmällä, uskaltaisin veikata tätä yhdeksi vuoden parhaista levyistä.

Olen hyvin pitkälle Villen kanssa samaa mieltä, mutta silti en antaisi levylle aivan noin korkeita pisteitä. Itseäni häiritsee juuri kuuntelunautinnon pirstaloituminen.

Vaikka yleensä monipuolisuus on valttia, voi silläkin saralla heittää yli ja silloin kokonaisuus on helposti erittäin levoton. Levystä saa kiinni oikeastaan vaan kappaleiden pidemmissä osuuksissa, kunnes seuraava klassinen välikohta johdattaa meidät psykedelian synkkään maastoon.

Levy ei missään nimessä ole huono, mutta sen monipuolisuus tuo esiin ongelmia joita ei musiikkia kuunnellessa joudu usein käsittelemään. Pidän bändin debyytistä kovastikin, mutta sen kuuntelemisen joutuu ajoittamaan hyvinkin tarkkaan, jotta siitä saa kaiken irti eikä pääse turhautumaan. Taustamusiikiksi en tätä suosittelisi.

Pripomínat, že juhoamerická metalová scéna má svoje obskúrne zaciatky dávno za sebou a momentálne patrí k najbúrlivejšie sa rozvíjajúcim koncinám, sa v dobe, ked si väcšina "metalistov" vystací s tým, co im naservírujú najtrendovejšie a najgigantickejšie vydavatelstvá asi aj patrí. Tí, co sa vo svetovom podzemí hrabú dôkladnejšie vedia, že Chile v tomto smere nie je žiadna ospalá diera, tí, ktorí o velkosti tamojšej scény nemajú potuchy, by sa zrejme pri oboznámení so situáciou nestacili cudovat. Kvalitného death a thrash metalu slušné množstvo, black metalu každého myslitelného zamerania a kvality do blba, a pokial ide o doom, tak mladú bandu (vznikla v rokoch 2000-2001) Mar De Grises možno oznacit za objav v celosvetovom meradle.

"The Tatterdemalion Express" je jej debutom, ale debutom vyslovene vyzretým, kiež by v prípade "slávnejších" zoskupení takto vyzerali ich v poradí tretie albumy. Štýlové oznacenie máte poniže, neviem, co jeho autor myslel tou proklamovanou progresivitou, nikdy ma nebavilo pocítat takty a rozplývat sa nad ich prípadnou nepravidelnostou, a použitie mimometalových hudobných a nástrojových prvkov tiež nikto nemusí za progresívne oznacit automaticky. Ale vzhladom na to, že do albumu som sa musel dostat pocas viacerých posluchov, aby ma nakoniec totálne pohltil, na tom možno nieco bude :- ) Ak si teda s týmto diskom nedáte rady hned na prvý šup, odporúcam návrat, prípadne aj viacero, potom to stojí za to. Ako by som zacal - ak vás súcasná tvorba spolkov ako Anathema ci my Dying Bride neberie až tak, ako by ste chceli a je vám smutno za ich dramatickou, taživou, tragicko-melancholickou tvárou metalových cias "The Silent Enigma", "Pentecost III", "Turn Loose The Swans", tak toto je album pre vás. Dokonca nemožno nepriznat, že mnohé náladové prvky, postupy a vokály, zvlášt nerevané, melodické a bolestné, Anathemu pripomínajú stopercentne. Niekto by mohol vyskocit s obvinením - "aha, takže len dalšia tupá kópia." Nuž, rozhodne mi to tak nepripadá. Krcovitý pokus nieco napodobnit by bol totiž neprepocutelný, skôr si myslím, že ludom hudobne podobne cítiacim sa zvláštnou zhodou náhod podarilo nieco velmi podobné, len v inom case a na inom mieste. A nie je to celé len o podobnosti so starou Anathemou. Mar De Grises sú ovela viac. Povedzme, že tvoria poriadne komplexnú náladovú metalovú hudbu, s použitím doom a deathmetalových elementov, art rocku, elektroniky, soundtrackovej tvorby, a všetko je s rozmachom budované na konštrukciách, typických skôr pre klasickú hudbu. Pri casovo velkorysých kompozíciách sa tažko dá hovorit o pesnickovom vyznení, skôr ide o "vreckové formáty" väcších hudobných žánrov. O epickosti by som tu vzhladom na introspektívnu textovú zložku nehovoril, vhodnejším termínom je snád dramatickost, striedajúca výbušné, monumentálne party s krehkými, volnými a melancholicky pokojnými pasážami. Jednota spájania týchto kontrastov, podciarknutá nádhernými farebnými melódiami gitár, klavíra a kláves ukrýva úžasný vnútorný náboj a hlboký, tažko definovatelný pocit. Dielo je skutocne pôsobivé aj po vokálnej stránke, ak si dáte dokopy to najlepšie, co možno pocut u klasikov Anathema, My Dying Bride, alebo aj u takých Summoning, tak to všetko tu nájdete - prácu s hlasom, striedajúcim zúrivý i zúfalý rev, priškrtený šepto-škrek, pokojný, ale aj naliehavý a bolestný cistý spev, všetko vo vyváženej kvalite.

Zvukovo je dielo ovplyvnené doommetalovou klasikou a osobne si myslím, že vyznenie albumu neponecháva velký priestor na hladanie nedostatkov. Pravdupovediac, najprv mi trochu po rozume behala tá miestami výrazná podobnost s Anathemou, ale predsa len si myslím, že Mar De Grises debutovali s neobycajne strhujúcim, a pritom nie prvoplánovým dielom.

C`è chi conosce il Cile grazie alle magie di Marcelo Salas (ovviamente periodo Lazio), chi per quelle di Zamorano, altri ancora per il duro regime di Pinochet, ma nessuno per via di questi Mar De Grises.
Difficilmente il five-piece cileno riuscirà ad ottenere presso i comuni mortali una visibilità tale da poter concorre con i nomi precedentemente citati, tuttavia chi ama il metal ed apprezza la buona musica se ne sbatterà gli "zebedei" di tutto ciò ed identificherà il Cile con questa band.

Dopo gli ottimi Swallow The Sun (il loro `The Morning Never Came` è - a mio avviso - uno dei dischi più belli del 2003) la Firebox ci ha preso gusto e rilascia un altro disco interessante. I Mar De Grises sono meno "asfissianti" rispetto ai STS, garantendo alla loro proposta musicale una maggiore ariosità. Il segreto dei Mar De Grises è quello di inserire una intrigante componente progressive su un substrato prevalentemente death/doom. `The Tatterdemalion Express` riesce in questo modo ad essere ossessivo e pesante (`El Otro`), malinconico, visionario ed immobile (`Onirica`), romantico e soffuso (`Self portrait no.1`). Il disco risulta intrigante, nonostante qualche richiamo agli Anathema post `The Silent Enigma`, ma forse le parti più ambient ed atmosferiche alla fine corrodono eccessivamente la componente angosciosa tipica del death/doom.
In ogni caso siamo di fronte ad un buon debutto ed ora aspettiamo solo la loro conferma: la Firebox li ha "fatti suoi" anche per il prossimo album.

Es un orgullo para nuestra escena el que se editen este tipo de trabajos de nivel internacional tanto en lo que es producción como en la composición. El álbum debut de estos hijos del gris Santiago es un gran ejemplo de ello: una pieza fina de música desoladora, profunda e intensa.

Estos muchachos a pesar de no llevar muchos años en la escena han hecho una carrera meteórica en cuanto al progreso de toda índole, me refiero a madurez musical, técnica, popularidad y lo más destacable, un sitial en la escena mundial del Doom Metal. Y esto último lo digo con propiedad ya que ellos han sabido buscar los espacios y no se han quedado dormidos en los laureles como a la mayoría de las bandas Chilenas les pasa. Sin ir más lejos "The Tatterdemalion Express" está editado y producido por el sello Finés Firebox Records, una naciente compañía con varias producciones de calidad a su haber, que supo apreciar el talento en nuestros compatriotas.

Pero bueno vamos a lo que importa realmente, la música. Este es un trabajo rico en diferentes capas sonoras, juego de intensidades, detalles, composición interesantísima (se notan los estudios), un alto nivel de ejecución técnica y por su puesto el feeling que su estilo requiere. Todo esto está manejado inteligente y cuidadosamente, lo que se conjuga en un resultado final que saca aplausos. El estilo como muchos saben es una especie de Doom, forjado con dedicación hasta dejarlo bastante fuera de los cánones normales del cliché. Me refiero a que a pesar de ser Metal pesado, lento y depresivo, existen muchos pasajes donde las armonías y estructuras son más experimentales, casi importadas de otros estilos o fuentes de creatividad. Todo esto le da aire a la intención global, incluso permitiendo atraer no solo a doomsters acérrimos, sino que a todo aquel que quiera apreciar un trabajo acucioso de música lúgubre e intensa.

La producción fue grabada por el ingeniero Raphael França, conocido ya por sus trabajos de alto nivel dentro del Metal (Six Magics, Death Living, Coprofago, Bloden Wedd, Poema Arcanvs, Bewitched...) que junto a los muchachos lograron una vez más sacar adelante un producto de calidad internacional, que reluce todo lo mejor de Mar De Grises para competir con cualquier disco del mundo. Como disco debut creo que es lo mejor que los chicos pudieron haber entregado, hay detalles subjetivos que quizás algunos podrían señalar, pero sinceramente creo que es una producción redondita por donde se le mire, aparte que la riqueza musical deja en segundo plano cualquier análisis sonoro.

El álbum posee 7 cortes, 2 de los cuales "Storm" y "Recklessness" pertenecen a su Demo y creo personalmente que la evolución entre estos y el resto, se nota bastante sobre todo a nivel de identidad. Como opinión personal me hubiese encantado escuchar en su lugar dos temas nuevos, pero bueno esa es materia que no me incumbe. De los 5 restantes, "Self Portrait Nª1" es un tema en piano muy minimalista pero no por ello menos intenso, el cual requiere ser escuchado con paciencia, calma y silencio. Similarmente "Onírica" cierra el disco con una intención parecida, un tema más bien acústico y orientado a los teclados, voces recitadas y el resto de instrumentos acompañando en forma simple. Finalmente los 3 restantes son canciones con mucha progresión y evolución, pesados cuando se requiere, suaves en otros momentos, donde todos los instrumentos y voz se entrelazan con buen gusto. De estos mi favorito (y el mejor tema de MDG en mi opinión personal) es "Be Welcome Oh Hideous Hell" que conjuga el dramatismo inicial con la experimentación rítmica, juegos de riffeo muy propios, velocidad y lentitud, en resumen una gran composición.

Por último solo me resta felicitar a todo el equipo gris por su profesionalismo, espero verlos hasta el cansancio en las tablas durante el 2004, mucha suerte!

Ce groupe Chilien s'adresse principalement à ceux qui ont écouté sans relâche autant Tiamat (époque "Wildhoney") que Anathema (avant "Judgment"). Non seulement cet album ne concernera que les amateurs d'oeuvres atmosphériques mais il faudra également qu'ils aient une ouïe aguérie aux voix extrêmes (qui ne sont pas majoritaires mais bien présentes). L'effet des compos est malsain à souhait et ce qui m'apparaissait au départ comme une longue intro d'un groupe de black metal, a fini par se dévoiler comme un condensé d'ambiances bien sombres. N'en doutez pas, MAR DE GRISES nous offre de vrais morceaux et non pas d'abusifs instrumentaux uniquement construits de nappes synthétiques. Les grosses guitares, les voix et la batterie sont bien de la partie et le tout avec un excellent son. Serait-ce un album dont on aurait du mal à se passer ? Après quelques écoutes attentives, c'est certain. Le premier titre (11 mn) vous plongera directement dans un monde mi-apaisant, mi-obscure. Le parallelle que je ferai avec ce disque, ce serai un film. Cela vous donne l'impression de rentrer dans un univer inconnu et envahissant mais dans lequel vous vous sentez relativement bien (comme avec Tiamat...). Je n'ai pas été déçu par cette experience.

Chileläisen Mar De Grisesin metallinkatkuista The Tattermadelion Expressiä ei uskoisi orkesterin debyytiksi. Raskaan ja melodisen doomin muodostamien perustusten päällä lepäilee elementtejä niin progressiivisesta deathistä kuin ambientistakin. Kovin tarkkaa genrerajausta on turha yrittää tehdä, ja parasta onkin suosiolla nojata tuolissaan taaksepäin ja kuunnella levylautasen antimia.

Yhtyeen soitto kuulostaa ensimmäisen levytyssopimuksensa saaneen autotallibändin sijaan kokeneen röykkiön huolella hiotulta aikaansaannokselta. Harrastelijadoomille tutut muutaman mailin perässä laahaavat rumpukompit sekä isoveljen lelusyntetisaattorit loistavat poissaolollaan, ja tilalla on kauniita sävellyksiä mahtipontisiin sovituksiin verhoiltuna. Tyylitaju on kaikin puolin kunnossa.

Pääosassa on luonnollisesti herra sähkökitara särkijäkvartetteineen, mutta sivurooleissa nähdään varsin mainiosti toteutettuja väliosuuksia, joiden aikana tummasta paahdosta tiputetaan vaihdetta aavemaisiin pianomelodioihin. Melankolinen tunnelma pidetään hanskassa alusta loppuun nimenomaan hyvien biisien avulla, eikä fiilistelykohtauksista ole tehty liian pitkiä tai mitäänsanomattomia.

Vaikka soitinpuolella ei soundeissa valituksen sijaa olekaan, löytyy hampaankolosta sentään jotain kaiveltavaa. Vokalistin tuskaisa karjuminen yltyy kyllä välillä todella koskettaviin mittoihin, mutta rauhallisemmissa hetkissä komea ääni tahtoo hukkua pahasti muun metelin sekaan. Lauluraitoja olisi voinut huoletta nostaa enemmän pintaan, sillä levyn muun paukutuksen tavoin ne ovat varsin hienoa kuultavaa.

Also doom metal is not limited to certain Continents anymore and comes from all parts of the world (except the Dark Continent, but that’s another story). This is proved by the Chilean Mar De Grises. I suppose they must have been pioneers in South America for the band was founded in 2000. It took until July 2001 to find the right musicians but with this line-up they are on a bed of roses because it sounds marvellous! We do not have to deal with obscure demo-material here but are regaled with clear compositions with a flowing and touching course. There is enough variety by mixing their doom roots with other influences, some of them are even not metal related but well up from classical and atmospheric sources. One moment we perceive the sphere of Saturnus, a bit later we are stuck in the middle of a cosmic dance better known from early Pink Floyd.

The sound of ‘The Tatterdemalion Express’ (free translation: the train of tramps) is un-south American perfect! I cannot neglect to mention that Raphaël Franca of Poema Arcanus (Polish doom-band) had a part in the recording process, surely a well-known name amongst the adepts of doom I think. There are seven tracks whereof five of them are about 8-10 minutes long.

Humble parts with a whispering instrumentation and blushing mutters are varied with full-power doom eruptions of total surrender. Drumbeats like splashing water, crystal-clear piano-notes, a shivering wall of guitars… we all get this in the first track ‘El Otro’ already. It can be considered as a performance in the twilight zone between wake and dreams. It is in ‘To See Saturn Fall’ we meet a chaotic, cosmic intermezzo. If blessed with a bit of fantasy, we can hear the planet Saturn dive down into empty spaces. But it is neatly caught in the undaunted web of guitars. Harmonic structures in a lingering texture. Marcelo Rodriguez (also taking care of the vocals) glues this all together with his high-flown keyboards. ‘Storm’ has its strength during the moments of instrumental introspection, sounding rather fragile in the beginning but soon we move full force towards ascending guitar one-liners. After the seventh minute these Chilean lads got here, smoothly getting loose, the grandeur of the genuine Saturnus sound.

On the other hand, ‘Recklessness’ is a very catchy song that starts with slightly distorted guitars and rippling piano. But Mar De Grises has also a classical base. Listen to the instrumental ‘Self Portrait No. 1’, dominated by classic piano themes. Suddenly struck by lightning by ‘Be Welcome Oh Hideous Hell’ with the familiar flashy riffs and whispering voice. ‘Onirica’ is a beautiful closing track. An introvert start, very atmospheric, a single swell to heaviness and then the uprising: a filmic apotheosis in E Grandeur. Here we are landed once again in the Umma Gumma era (experimental – Pink Floyd). Be warned: this CD is dangerous to get addicted to!

On ne peut pas vraiment dire que la scène métal chilienne soit très prolifique, à ce jour seules des formations comme Coprofago et Bitterdusk ont sensiblement réussi à sortir des sentiers battus tout en restant malheureusement assez méconnus. Découverte plus qu'intéressante, Mar de grises nous propose un doom métal avant-gardiste, sombre et cruel, progressif et très émotionnel. "The tadderdemalion express" constitue une véritable oeuvre inventive, tortueuse, labyrinthique et intemporelle qui démontre une personnalité évidente au service d'un professionnalisme irréprochable. Les musiciens laissent entrevoir une importante richesse musicale qui ne demande qu'à s'exprimer: ossature rythmique complexe, chant batardé emo/death, sensibilité extrême, puissance des ambiances s'entrecroisant avec la pesanteur d'une lourdeur intense des rythmes, structures riches et étonnantes viennent mettre en place 7 titres transcendantaux et hypnotisant s qui engendrent directement une descente au cœur de la folie malsaine venant piétiné sur les eaux troubles d'un My Dying Bride dans ses meilleurs jours de désespoir et d'expérimentations.
Le groupe détient ainsi l'essence même d'une mélancolie angoissante marquante dans laquelle les atmosphères dark sont à leur paroxysme. De plus la pochette reste atypique et travaillée.
Oeuvre ultime aboutie à classer hors des temps et des modes actuelles, l'ère de la révolution artistique à sonner, la relève est assurée et le chaos proche...

Do you think you know what doom metal is? Think again, as Chile's Mar de Grises ("sea of gray") has thrown every doom metal preconception out the window. With a truly unique sound and a penchant for experimentation, this band has rejuvinated a genre that had been stagnating for a number of years.

Mar de Grises' overall sound is doom/death a la early Anathema, but with a progressive edge and even more atmosphere (Keyboards are used extensively, both melodically and for effect). At times there is an almost funeral doom feel, i.e.: "El Otro", with extremely slow riffing and drum patterns, creating an almost unbearable oppressive atmosphere. Other tunes follow a more unusual formula, with tons more atmosphere and feel changes than much of what we're used to from traditional doom/death bands. For example, "To See Saturn Fall" has a cool ebb and flow, from its comparitively fast beginning, collapsing into itself towards the middle (the out-of-control drum fills, grotesquely animated piano figure, and dissonant guitar chording is brilliant), only to pick itself up and end in the manner in which it started. It sounds at first to be mere noise, but it is most definitely planned that way. We even get a beautiful five-minute piano instrumental, "Self Portrait No.1" that shows the breadth of keyboardist/singer Marcelo's compositional skills. It is delicate, dissonant and darkly melodic, and is a refreshing contrast to the rest of the album. Overall, the songwriting shows uniqueness and disregard for convention.

Mention must be made of Marcelo's vocals, which range from death growls to chanting to clean singing. They are used more as another instrument, as opposed to the traditional "lead" voice. They add a new kind of texture to the proceedings. Actually,vocals are used rather sparingly throughout.

I really liked the production on 'The Tatterdemalion Express'. It is rather dense at times, adding to the oppressive feel of the music. There are some nice guitar and bass tones (Listen to the beginning of "Onirica", and you'll know what I mean), and the drums have a nice punch to them. At first I didn't like the way the vocals were mixed and heavily effected, but I soon realized that by placing them back in the mix, it brought everything else out. By treating the vocals as another instrument, it allows for more activity elsewhere, without sounding like a garbled mess.

This is one band that will be getting a lot of attention in doom metal circles. It is experimental, sublime, and heavy in every way possible. This isn't the kind of album you can truly appreciate on the first listen. It may require a dozen or so spins to truly grasp Mar de Grises' intentions. I'm not even sure if I did, but I do know that I like it. If you like a bit of a challenge, this is for you.

Da haben sich diese Chilenen einen sehr eigenwilligen Titel für ihre neue Scheibe ausgesucht, nun ja, es passt hervorragend zur eigenwilligen Musik. Firebox stehen als Label ja eigentlich für extremen Doom wie My Shameful oder Aarni, nun, das hier schlägt im Grunde aus der Reihe, macht aber dem experimentierfreudigen Ruf des Labels alle Ehre. Mar de Grises sind progressiv, oh ja, verdammt progressiv. Zuerst fallen die stilistischen Zutaten auf, die sie vom Progrock, Heavygothic, Deathmetal, Doommetal und wer weiß woher noch erbeutet haben, um sie in einen völlig neuen Zusammenhang zu bringen. So entstehen dann Stücke, die den Hörer ob ihrer Vielfalt und ausladenden Arrangements in Verbund mit extremen Stimmungs - und Dynamikschwankungen bestimmt vorerst völlig verwirrt hinterlassen. Hier ist nicht Mitbangen angesagt, Mar de Grises sind eine Band, in deren Musik sich der Hörer hineinfühlt, hineindenkt, hineinträumt. Nach und nach geben die komplexen Strukturen ihre Magie preis. Nicht wenige Passagen haben einen sehr verträumten, schwebenden Charakter, welcher die Sinne vernebelt und einen mit sich in die Tiefe der Komposition hineinzieht, wo sich dann vielerorts die Schlünde der Hölle öffnen mögen in Gestalt von mittelschnellem, etwas vertracktem Deathmetal. Dieses angenehme Grauen ist sicherlich nie von längerer Dauer, aber seine Häufigkeit läßt es nicht aus der Seele entfleuchen. Mar de Grises machen es spannend, verlieren sich nicht in ihren Stücken (einfach nur "Songs" will ich das nicht nennen), obschon der Hörer sich darin verlieren kann. Es gibt einige Bands im extremeren Bereich, die mit Strukturen des alten Artrocks ihren Metal - und Gothsound in neue Sphären eintauchen lassen, Mar de Grises sind eine davon, eine der besten wohlgemerkt. Man braucht halt seine Zeit und auch sicher mehr als nur einen oder zwei Durchläufe, um die Klasse dieser Scheibe vollends zu entdecken, dann aber wird man sie lieben. Alle anderen, denen nicht diese Geduld gegeben sein mag, werden sie hassen. Dazwischen gibt es nichts.

Working for 3 years before releasing their debut, this Chilean band explodes with a colorful sound that is based in doom metal but incorporates a wide variey of approaches (progressive, classical, rock, ambient, electronic, death metal). Hard to categorize yet impressive.

Something is happening in Chile and the good records keep popping up from there, one after the other. After the excellent “No Gods, No Masters” from CRIMINAL comes the debut album from yet another talented band - MAR DE GRISES. These guys had previously released only one demo, which was more than enough to make them well known all around the globe. As a consequence they signed up a deal for two records with the reputable (till now) Finnish company Firebox Records. Their style is an interesting combination of doom, death metal and post rock!!! MY DYING BRIDE must have a great influence on them and they don’t try to hide it in any way, but don’t be afraid, they are not cheap thieves. This record doesn’t contain a lot of lyrics but the music is full of colours, dark but simultaneously warm. It evokes a great number and variety of emotions. The slow doom parts, the melodic post-rock, the epic feeling of classical music, are all mixed up in a beautiful way... The rhythm section builds a heavy background, where the guitars mourn or scream to express their pain, their fear, their anger. Keyboards are heard only when they are necessary and Marcelo Rodriguez voice surrounds the listener. Although I am not a great fan of harsh melodies, I cannot resist the magic of this record. Of course we are not dealing here with something innovating or extraordinary - just a very very good record. Considering the fact that this is the band’s debut, it is a real diamond when on the other hand bands are trying to become atmospheric by adding keyboards and female vocals to their music. Don’t hesitate to dive into the sea of feelings it creates.

Deze Chileense doomband werd me vorig jaar al door Igor Leiva van Poema Arcanvs aangeraden, en nu ik eindelijk de kans heb gehad goed naar het debuutalbum "The Tatterdemalion Express" te luisteren, blijkt dat het een goede tip was. Mar de Grises speelt een zeer gevarieerde vorm van doom metal, die deels gebaseerd is op doom/death, maar wellicht ook interessant is voor lieden die het niet zo hebben op standaard doom/death bands wiens muziek sterk op een voorgekauwde formule steunt.

"The Tatterdemalion Express" is een album dat z'n tijd neemt om te bezinken. Dit is niet het soort doom album dat bijna exclusief uit langdradige riffs en diepe grunts bestaat; de heren van Mar de Grises nemen de luisteraar gedurende een uurtje mee op een boeiende vlucht over een afwisselend muzikaal landschap. De invloeden zijn schijnbaar talrijk. Funeral doom, death metal, progressieve rock, psychedelica… Het is een kleurrijk geheel. Een element van onvoorspelbaarheid en verrassing is dan ook een van de belangrijkste karakteristieken van de veelzijdige doomsound van Mar de Grises. Een beetje open-minded doomliefhebber weet er wel raad mee, denk ik.
Doordat de lange nummers ook intern erg variëren is "The Tatterdemalion Express" echt een 'albumplaat' in plaats van een 'songplaat'. Elk nummer kent zo wel z'n memorabele riffs en unieke stukken, maar ik heb de plaat meer als een massief geheel ervaren. Daardoor vergt het wat meer luisterbeurten dan gewoonlijk om een beetje grip op de composities te krijgen. Laat je hier echter niet door ontmoedigen, de beloning is zonder meer de moeite waard.

Met uitstekende releases van Reverend Bizarre, My Dying Bride en Mar de Grises kan dit jaar qua doom voor mij al niet meer stuk. En dan zitten er ook nog nieuwe releases van Esoteric en Aarni aan te komen. Ik hef mijn bierpul en toost op een doomy voortzetting van het jaar.

MAR DE GRISES Debütalbum hab ich zusammen mit der Scheibe von Swallow The Sun bekommen – und im Vergleich zu den Finnen sind MAR DE GRISES noch ne Ecke doomiger, schwermütiger, depressiver, nihilistischer. Firebox hat das 2002er Demo der Chilenen so sehr gefallen, dass sie ihnen ein halbes Jahr Studiozeit gegeben haben, in der „The Tatterdemalion Express“ eingespielt wurde. Herausgekommen ist ein schwer verdaulicher Klumpen Doom Metal, fast eine Stunde lang und echt düster. Es gibt in einigen Songs zwar fast schon rockige Passagen („To See Saturn Fall“ oder „Storm“), aber die meiste Zeit gibt’s ausufernde Instrumentalpassagen, hin und wieder durch Vocals unterbrochen, die so viel Leid und Seelenschmerz transportieren dass selbst eine Frohnatur wie ich depressiv werden könnte. Den Songs kommt dabei die gute Produktion zu Hilfe, durch die eine echte Soundwand aufgebaut wird, die sehr erdrückend daherkommt, wie ein Strom Lava ergießt sich die Musik aus den Boxen. Die spärlich eingesetzten Keys sind im Gegensatz dazu klar und vielleicht nen Tick zu laut, mir gingen sie schnell auf die Nerven, werden aber zum Glück nur selten derart benutzt. MAR DE GRISES scheuen sich nicht vor kleinen Ausflügen in andere Genres zurück (Death Metal, liegt ja aber auch nahe haha) und klauen auch mal bei Pink Floyd, was die Scheibe interessanter macht und die Kompetenz der Musiker zeigt, die solche Einflüsse ohne Probleme in den eigenen Sound einbauen. MAR DE GRISES sind eine bemerkenswerte Doom-Band die (natürlich) nie auch nur ansatzweise hörbar für die Masse sein wird, aber in ihrem Genre echt was Eigenes geschaffen haben und Fans alter My Dying Bride oder Paradigma sicher gefallen werden. Leute, für die Paradise Lost die einzige Berührung mit düsterer Mucke gewesen sind, sollten allerdings tunlichst die Finger von diesem Klumpen Dunkelheit lassen…

Curioso il destino, alle volte. Leggi il flyer di presentazione dei cileni Mar De Grises, che parla di "doom-prog", e già ti immagini una mostruosa creatura tipo i Thergothon suonati in 17/8.
Poi metti su il disco, e rimani ancora più stupito.
'The Tatterdemalion Express', infatti, è sostanzialmente un disco doom. Variegato e dalle mille influenze, ma pur sempre doom. Ci troverete dentro momenti funeral un po' "à-la-Thergothon" (appunto), stacchi d'atmosfera memori dei primi Anathema, qualche (nemmeno tanto velata) influenza Pantheist, alle volte persino i The Blood Divine di 'Awaken'. Il tutto amalgamato in pezzi lunghi, magmatici, a tratti opprimenti, molto spesso sognanti.
Già, e il prog in tutto questo dove sta? Non crediamo che qualche liquido stacco strumentale e dei momenti acustici e intimisti siano sufficienti a considerare Genesis e Yes tra le influenze principali dei cileni. Certo è che, rispetto ad altre band di genere, i Mar de Grises non puntano solo sulle atmosfere ma anche sul songwriting. E, chiaramente, rischiano. Rischiano perché sfiorano spesso l'eccesso. Eccesso di confidenza, che potrebbe portare al temutissimo "effetto-collage". O eccesso di prudenza, che li relegherebbe nel limbo delle promesse non mantenute.
Beh, per questa volta rischi scongiurati: i cileni hanno personalità e talento, scrivono lunghe ma non sfiancanti, complesse ma non cervellotiche, angoscianti ma non inascoltabili. Insomma, paiono aver mediato alla perfezione le due anime del loro sound, creando qualcosa di sufficientemente nuovo e originale da meritar loro un plauso. Teneteli d'occhio.

Den Namen "Mar de Grises" hatte ich noch nicht wirklich gehört, als diese nette PromoCD aus dem Hause Firebox Records ins Haus flatterte. "Melodic prog. doom metal" steht auf dem Infozettel - interessant! "Origin: Chile" - noch interessanter!! Also nichts wie in die Anlage mit dem "Tatterdemalion Express", und reingehört. Sehr heavy klingt es, sehr atmosphärisch dicht beginnt man und hält über die gesamte Spielzeit von über einer Stunde ein beklemmendes Gefühl aufrecht - schafft mit melodischer, doch auch überaus düsterer Gitarrenarbeit ein Album zu prägen, das hoffentlich nicht an den DoomMetallern dieser Welt vorübergehen wird. Kennt jemand noch die Iren Arcane Sun, die vor Jahren ein superbes Debut auf Ars Metalli herausgebracht, sich dann aber sang- und klanglos verabschiedet haben? The Tatterdemalion Express erinnert mich nicht selten an eben jene Scheibe. Sowohl von der Melodieführung als auch vom Gitarrensound her sind Parallelen sicherlich nicht zu verkennen. Nur im Gesang ist man deutlich woanders angesiedelt; die Chilenen halten es lieber mit ausgiebigen Instrumentalpassagen, in denen sie ihre Spannungsbögen geduldig aufbauen, und streuen nur selten dezenten Gesang ein, der mehr wie das Wehklagen eines Dämonen aus der Unterwelt klingt, heiseres Grunzen (Sentenceds Amok läßt grüßen!) oder eine zaghafte klare Stimme über ruhigem akustischem Zupfen. Doch immer wieder setzen diese herrlichen fetten Parts ein, in denen mit Doublebass, schweren Gitarren und bedrückenden Leads unendlich kraftvoller Druck erzeugt wird, der jedem Liebhaber doomiger Klänge dieses Album einfach vergöttern lassen müßte.

The Tatterdemalion Exprees me parace un disco muy bueno de Melodic Progresivo Doom Metal porque es una de las pocas bandas que tienen bastante originalidad y unos de los mejores trabajos que haya escuchado de Chile, porque después de haber escuchado a bandas chilenas como Poema Arcanus, Bitterdusk, etc.; esperaba lo mejor de Mar de Grises, ya que tenian buenos antecedentes con su demo 2002 que fue lanzado independientemente el cual fue grabado en dos horas como si fuera un ensayo cualquiera, y con el cual lograrian su entrada a Firebox de Finlandia; en otras palabras, es una banda que promete mucho en la escena sudamericana.
Afiliados con Firebox lanzaron su primer álbum "The Tatterdemalion Express" el cual contiene 7 temas que realmente estan al nivel de bandas como Anatema, Antimatter, Green Carnation, In The Woods., y sobre todo es muy original en sus composiciones, porque desde que colocas el cd en la compactera y escuchas el tema "El Otro", se da inicio a un lamento gutural acompañado de golpes suaves de batería que van conjuntamente con los solos cortos de guitarra y un excelente trabajo de teclados; el cual te da la sensacion de que "ente" estaría penando a tu alrededor y te sintieras muerto con una vision al mundo de los muertos; para que a los 2:54 minutos tu alma se tranquilíze, llenándose de paz y te encamines por la soledad y escuches tu propia voz gritando desde los mas profundo de tu ser junto a Marcelo Rodríguez(teclado y voces) y termines tu lamento extinguiendo tu aura de este mundo y darte paso a "To See Saturn Fall" donde no termina tu sufrimiento. Es en este nuevo mundoen el cual comienzas a preguntarte ¿en donde estoy?¿para que vine aca?, y mientras avanza el tema te das cuenta que estas en un mundo de sonidos enfermizos y llenos de golpes producidos por Alejandro Arce (batería de Norphelia y Mar de Grises), y con los piques de guitarra de Rodrigo Morris y Sergio Alvarez; estando acompañado por Rodrigo Gálvez(bajo), el cual te crea una visión a un más pesada de tu alma y del disco. Luego escuchamos "Storm" el cual es un tema salido dentro del contexto de las dos primeras canciones, dado que es un cambio bien fuerte y podria afirmar que la continuación es "Recklessness" que se acopla muy bien y hasta te da un nuevo concepto del disco y te hace apaciguar tu mundo; no tanto en el viaje de la pena, tristeza, etc, porque si bien es cierto es mucho cambio desde mi punto de vista, ya que es una atmosfera nueva dentro del disco.
Luego escucharas que cambia todo el ambiente de nuevo con "Self Portrait no 1", pero esta vez con un solo de Marcelo que realmente me da la sensación de algo mas personal en el y como si te estaría tratando decirte o comunicarte un mensaje con mucha melancolia y tristeza.
Pero después tenemos un tema "Be Welcome Oh Hideous Hell" que realmente es el mejor tema de esta placa ya que mezclan todos los intrumentos, dando campo a solos que comienzan con las guitarras hasta los teclados en pocas palabras es un muy versátil y esta bien elaborado como todos sus temas sin desacreditar a los otros 6 temas, ya que tiene muchos parajes inhospitos el cual crea en cada uno de nosotros un sentimiento de pureza y tranquilidad pero al mismo tiempo la melancolia de la persona oyente.
"Onírica" es un tema lento y suave dentro del caos de los anteriores temas, pero no por eso es el menos interesante, ya que para los fanáticos de la música triste y melancólica, este es su tema y su himno de tristeza. En conclusion, creo que "The Tatterdemalion Express" es uno de los mejores albunes domm de este año y realmente felicito a Raphaël Franca(Poema Arcanus - Iconoclast) y Carolina Desbordes por la buena mezcla y masterización de este álbum e invito a todo fan del Melodic Doom Metal a que se compre este disco, porque verán que es un trabajo de gran calidad y lo ultimo "SOUTHAMERICA RULES".

Ritornano in pista i cileni Mar De Grises con questo "The Tatterdemalion Express", primo full-lenght per il gruppo che già dal 2001 aveva attirato notevoli attenzioni ed aspettative su di sé, con il loro primo e lodato demo autoprodotto.
Al primo ascolto del platter saltano subito alle orecchie le somiglianze con un altro gruppo cileno, i Poema Arcanus, con i quali condividono lo stesso stile musicale, un Doom/Prog (a dire il vero molto più levigato ed efficace di quello dei compatrioti) caratterizzato da riffoni in stile Sabbath, voce alternata (perlopiù un parlato "sporco", simile a quello di Cavanagh su "The Silent Enigma", e il classico growl di rito) e tastiere sempre presenti che aiutano a donare al disco un mood non troppo oscuro, lontano dagli stilemi tipici di ogni Doom-band.
"The Tatterdemalion Express" ha il grande merito di crescere con il tempo: se ad un primo impatto infatti il complesso sonoro dei cileni appare confuso e immaturo, con il cumularsi di ascolti tutto comincia a tornare, le splendide melodie racchiuse nelle loro canzoni, inizialmente coperte da uno strato di fuliggine dato dalla voglia di strafare del gruppo (che si credano i Pain Of Salvation? mmm... ), si schiudono, donando all'ascoltatore gemme di assoluto valore, fruibili fin dall'inizio del platter grazie all'opener "El Otro", canzone che alterna, in un passaggio graduale e sfumato, pesanti parti Doom/Death a minimali e soffusi rintocchi tastieristici, terminando poi con un finale dove i due generi si uniscono in una simbiosi perfetta, creando un'atmosfera grandiosamente psichedelica, diventando così il simbolo del platter e del sound del gruppo.
Le canzoni scorrono via con impressionante fluidità, nonostante la loro durata e nonostante qualche caduta di tono (vedi le masturbazioni sonore di "To See The Saturn Fall") lecita se pensiamo al fatto che si parla del primo album, si rimane piacevolmente colpiti da canzoni come "Recklessness" (già presente, così come "Storm" sul demo del gruppo), caratterizzata da una grande prova del cantante e da un lavoro chitarristico meravigliosamente oscuro e epico, da "Self Portrait No1 " , azzeccatissima strumentale per solo piano, inoltre compirei un notevole sgarbo a me stesso se non citassi anche la conclusiva "Onirica", canzone descritta perfettamente dal titolo, ipnotica e sognante, degna chiusura di un album sorprendente.
Sono rimasto completamente sbalordito dal lavoro di questi cileni (di recente gruppo spalla ai The Gathering nel loro tour in Sudamerica), pur avendo amato il loro primo demo non avrei mai pensato che si potessero evolvere in un sound così innovativo e originale; "The Tatterdemalion Express" si rivela essere una ventata di freschezza all'asfittico orizzonte Doom, ma piacerà anche al progster stufo delle solite robe.

Forgive my ignorance, but I do not have a clue about the meaning of this CD's title. I guess that our Chilean friends will have a very nice explanation for this. I must admit that this title is very provocative and it was one of the factors that lead me to buy this CD. No, I do not buy CD from their titles, but it was an element among others.

Firebox records have done an impressive start by releasing an unholy set of extreme doom metal bands. Seems that there are a lot of friends of funeral doom metal and that’s good for the perseverance of doom metal scene. Mar De Grises are from Chile and everyone who is involved in underground metal is aware of the extremity of the Latin American bands. So don't be fooled by the labels sticker about melodic doom metal. Not that it doesn’t stand true, but I think that melody is complemental to their music. What they play is melodic doom/death metal in the same kind this was delivered by Anathema of their first period. Some other influences that can be listed are My Dying Bride and Saturnus (in the area of melodies). So their music isn’t only melodic, but slow and painful and stands away from other melodic doom metal bands' music (which are more melodic, than doom in some cases). They do not sound so British as their influences may incorrectly reveal, because they have their own mark to carve and to share with us in all seven songs of their CD. Their only drawback is that they play a hackneyed idiom and the demands are increased. Production is very good, surprisingly good I might say, and the artwork is outstanding.

These guys may come from the so-called "third world" (even through the avenue of the first one, Firebox records is from Finland), but they have nothing to jealous from other bands. After the completion of Mar De Grices’ CD listening I promised to my self to keep a close look to these guys and their company. I don’t know… something good comes this way.

El sucesor de su “Demo” del 2002 viene a ser ya la consagración de una banda que se ha sabido anteponer a la poca aceptación que hay de su particular estilo de música (pudiendo definirse como un “doom metal progresivo con tintes atmosféricos”) por parte de los metaleros y no tan metaleros locales, cosa que ellos bien saben, pero que no les impide dejar bien satisfechos a quienes hemos seguido a la banda desde hace ya un par de años. “The Tatterdemalion Express” es su debut también para con Firebox Records (Finlandia), que se caracteriza por firmar con bandas Funeral / Doom / Death (Tyranny, Swallow The Sun, Aarni, etc), lo que les garantiza una merecida distribución a lo largo del mundo. Entrando a comentar el disco en sí, todo comienza con “El Otro” un tema aletargado, desolador en un principio, voces desgarradoras se funden con riffs lentos, para luego dar paso a pasajes ambientales, susurros...mucha atmósfera, un buen manejo de los silencios y pausas y un excelente trabajo en las guitarras deja en evidencia la esencia de MdG en este tema de mas de 10 minutos (que, a modo de comentario personal, alcanza un clímax perfecto a desde los 7 minutos en adelante). “To See Saturn Fall” es el segundo tema del disco, comienza muy enérgico, se mezclan voces guturales y melodías limpias, donde la rítmica a destiempo le da un peso extra (gran trabajo con las frecuencias bajas) a un tema en un disco en que el sonido se caracteriza por ser muy ambiental (carácter dado quizás por el manejo de los susurros y el exceso de teclados atmosféricos que envuelven cada tema). “Storm” es otro de los puntos altos del disco y se destaca (a juicio personal) por las melodías muy bien logradas en las guitarras, tanto en las partes pesadas como en los emotivos pasajes acústicos, donde se destaca la independencia de cada uno de los instrumentos de cuerda, que juegan y danzan sobreponiéndose a un hermoso piano. “Recklessness” es un tema ya muy bien conocido y que tiene una estructura doom metal mas clásica, pianos, un bajo que suena como monstruo y riffs ascendentes y descendentes hacen de este tema uno de los más accesibles (suena como single). Seguimos con “Self Portrait No 1” y un piano delirante que evoca las mas extrañas sensaciones. Con “Be Welcome Oh Hideous Hell” llega la distorsión, con constantes pasos por semi-tonos y disonancias, voces limpias, la batería sonando a mil y mucho peso en las cuerdas, destacándose el genial manejo de los tiempos al final del tema, cosa que sorprende mucho. Otro temazo. Y para cerrar, “Onírica”, que es eso..... una invitación a soñar, con su ritmo lento...susurros, guitarras limpias y un bajo que golpea cada nota, es el cierre perfecto para un excelente disco de “música”, porque es eso, sin calificativos extras, MdG es una excelente banda de “música”, que al momento de componer no se encasillan en ningún estilo particular, de ahí el carácter “melódico/progresivo” con que Firebox define su estilo...apoyemos a la buena música nacional!!

Mar de Grises kommer fra Chile, samme land som et annet eminent metalband – Poema Arcanus. De har faktisk benyttet seg av samme studioet også, noe som har resultert i mye av samme lyd. Selve lydbildet er vel ganske forskjellig, men det skinner helt klart igjennom likheter som gjør det ganske lett å trekke paralleller

Firebox slipper mange finurligteter, og dette blir vel å regne som ultrakommersielt i deres sammenheng. Det var det som slo meg med dette bandet og. Firebox har nemlig en greie med at de trykker promoskriv på begge sider av et, dermed får du promoskrivet til to skiver samtidig, jeg leste om Mar de Grises samtidig som jeg fikk Tyranny-minien for ei tid tilbake, og jeg har gleda meg til denne… Beskrivelsen gikk som følger: Melodic progressive doom metal. Det passer meg utmerket, sammen med et såpass lekkert cover kan vel ikke en metal-fan gjøre annet en å glede seg.

Rent personlig har jeg vanskelig med å beskrive dette og.. Det er ambient, tidvis veldig doom, litt melodiøs deathmetal og litt sær rock.. Hmm.. Førstelåta er høres veldig funeral doom ut, med tunge gitarpartier, og dyp gurglende vokal. Jeg skal ikke påstå jeg ble helt overveldet av akkurat den, men heppsann.. det låt jo ok. Når To See Saturn Fall trådde til ble jeg mer overbevist. Her får man mer melodi, vokalen er fortsatt litt langt ned i lydbildet, men det er vel bare en vanesak. Det låter til tider ganske Poema Arcanus av dem. Men herre – for noen lekre gitarmelodier de lirer av seg. Herlig. Det arter seg ut i en reise igjennom et ambient, doomy prog-landskap. For å si det sånn: det kan jeg absolutt leve med !

Hele affæren klokker inn på omkring 56 minutter, fint fordelt over sju låter. Dette er genial debutplate, og nok et fortreffelig plateslipp ifra Firebox. Men la meg overrekke et lite tips; gi den litt tid, det trenger den. Ute nå !

Oh, how long it’s been since a doom record has proved both innovative and entirely pleasing to hear. Oh, how long it’s been since a doom record has taken more than a few casual spins to assimilate. If any genre can be labeled stale and mostly sterile, it’s doom metal. With mundane releases by bands like My Dying Bride in abundance, there’s rarely anything worthy of much excitement. All seem to feature the same melancholic vibe and with a plethora of clones, individuality is scarce. Mar De Grises is this year’s first exception, but hopefully not the last. The Tatterdemalion Express has been in constant rotation over the past few weeks and while it was initially pleasing, it’s become more and more gratifying a listen as its unique vibes and subtleties have made themselves more apparent.

Rooted firmly in doom, Chile’s Mar De Grises has made something odd and hugely diverse. The songs are huge, seven tracks nearing an hour, and they’re plentifully grandiloquent to keep from overstaying their welcome. The long-winded and subtle instrumental passages in between the more straightforward song oriented sections are the most notable feature that sets this band apart from others in the world of doom. They feature elements of psychedelia, neo-classical, and even what I might consider post rock. Every song’s core is melodic and extremely atmospheric, but that’s where the similarity ends. Some are borderline funeral doom, others are more melodic and mid-paced, and there are even a few forays into both death metal and even metalcore.

The production is very dense when necessary and crystal clear during mellower moments. It’s not perfect, but the desired wall of sound is achieved when necessary and overall its sound quality is far better than merely adequate. The guitar sound is crisp and strong, but the overall sound could be a bit more bass heavy. Piano/synths are very clear, though sometimes a bit overbearing, mostly when being used for atmosphere’s sake. The drumming is definitely exactly as it should be. Everything has exactly the punch that it needs and is exactly the right volume level for the music.

Mar De Grises is obviously made up of amply competent musicians. It takes more musicianship to be able to write such bizarre music than something more standard does, and the execution of these strangely beautiful songs is without flaw. The faster and more aggressive sections are superbly played, showcasing the fact that these guys are more than run of the mill doom. Though the more dirge-like sections and ambient interludes aren’t as dazzlingly technical as some others are, the necessary restraint is impressive nonetheless.

If you’ve gotten tired of nearly every doom album being nearly identical to many others, Mar De Grises is for you. If you’re tired of doom being instantly digestible and growing tiresome after far too few listens, Mar De Grises is for you. If, on the other hand, you don’t like any sort of adventurousness in your music and want to “get” exactly what the band is doing on first listen, stay away. Personally, I think this is an extremely gratifying listen that will likely continue to mature well for quite some time to come.

As I sit here writing this review, I’m almost tempted to just go ahead and end it all, for it is not often that modern day doom bands are able to conjure such feelings of despair and hopelessness as are these new Chilean phenomenons. These five South American manic depressives (it sounds like they are anyway) have only been around since 2000, but they have swiftly mastered their evil craft. Though THE TATTERDEMALION EXPRESS is only the band’s first album, it is of such intensely painful high quality that it is nigh impossible to imagine that the band are new to the scene.

Basically what you get on this disc is the classic Anathema album that we all wish was still within them, I’m talking going back to THE SILENT ENIGMA days here. So, though that will clearly never happen, Mar De Grises have stepped forward to fill the void. Right from the opening drone of “El Otro”, this disc is oppressively slow and heavy, the band venting all of their pent up emotions within their music. Though it is tough to make out what Marcelo is saying due to his use of growled vocals, it is also a testament to the strength of the music that you still feel the pure honest anguish that radiates in some palpable force from the band.

There is not a single bad song on this album, and it almost never becomes tedious to listen to, despite the fact the seven songs clock in at 56:07. The reason, to my ears, is that the band is intelligent enough to throw in the occasional unexpected passage to perk up your ears. For example, take the beginning of “To See Saturn Fall”: it begins with the anticipated dirge but suddenly breaks into a speedy traditional metal-sounding riff that is gone almost before you register what has happened. A similar effect is produced near the end of the song with some left-field drum crashes.

This album is the depressing equal to my other favorite doom band of late; Swallow the Sun, and that band made my Top 10 of last year. You may hear a doom metal album equal to this sometime during the year, but I highly doubt that you will hear one that is better. Highly recommended.

Südamerika ist gewiss nicht gerade eine häufige Quelle von Doom Metal Bands, so dass in geographischer Hinsicht bei den Chilenen durchaus von einer Ausnahmeerscheinung die Rede sein kann. "The Tatterdemalion Express" heisst das Debut des Fünfers, dem ein in Underground-Magazinen quer über den Erdball mit guten bis sehr guten Kritiken versehenes Demo vorausging. Dabei sind Mar de Grises ebenso wie die exzellenten Brasilianer Imago Mortis keineswegs ein Verfechter des traditionellen Zeitlupenstahls sondern bedienen sich bei verschiedenen Stilelementen. Death Metal Vocals und klassische Elemente spielen ebenso wie sphärischer Rock eine bedeutende Rolle in den sieben sehr progressiv und melodisch angelegten Kompositionen. So erinnert mich das extrem vielfältige und fast schon ausufernde "To see Saturn fall" vom Songaufbau her etwas an Opeth, die einen ähnlich wechselhaften und experimentellen Umgang mit ruhigen und aggressiven Passagen pflegen. Auf die Wucht dieses Stückes folgt das elegische "Storm", das mit seinen wunderschönen melancholischen Gitarrenläufen ein echter Geheimtipp ist und für meinen Geschmack den stärksten Song des Albums darstellt. Endlos traurig und erhaben schön wälzt sich das Stück knapp 11 Minuten wie flüssige Lava dahin, vor allem Fans solch aussenstehender Doom/Death Bands wie Morgion und Mourning Beloveth sollten hier größten Grund zur Freude finden.
"Recklessness" wartet mit höherem Tempo auf, gar ein wenig Schwarzmetallisches hat sich eingeschlichen und ergänzt sich gut mit den dominaten sphärischen Keyboards. Das klassische Piano-Stück "Self Portrait No.1" huldigt über weite Strecken der Stille, während "Be welcome oh hideous Help" recht viel Zeit braucht, um den Eindruck der überladenen Zerfahrenheit zu überwinden. Selbstverständlich wird dem Kontrast als Stilmittel auch beim abschliessenden Song die Stange gehalten, "Onirica" ist über weite Strecken ein sehr ruhiges Akustikstück, das jedoch entscheidend durch seine kurze, aber heftige Eruption im Mittelteil geprägt ist.

Wer also auf eine doomige Grundatmosphäre schwört, aber eher weniger mit den repetetiven Soundlandschaften vieler Genrevertreter anfangen kann, der sollte ebenso wie aufgeschlossene Progressive-Fans mal Bekanntschaft mit den Chilenen machen. "Storm" als einzelner Song ist jedenfalls schon mal ein heisser Anwärter für meine Doom Metal Favoriten des Jahres! (Volker)

Η Firebox records είναι μια φινλανδική εταιρία η οποία ασχολείται με underground κυρίως συγκροτήματα του doom metal χώρου. Ένα από αυτά είναι και οι Mar de grises οι οποίοι κατάγονται από την Ισπανία και το The tatterdemalion express είναι το πρώτο τους full length album. Δημιουργήθηκαν το 2000 και το 2001 κυκλοφόρησαν το πρώτο τους demo. Στο The tattardemalion express η μπάντα παίζει ατμοσφαιρικό doom metal αλλά όχι όπως το έχουμε συνηθίσει αφού υπάρχουν στο δίσκο και πολλά γρήγορα ξεσπάσματα. Επίσης υπάρχουν πολλά σημεία με πιάνο και τα φωνητικά ποικίλουν αφού θα ακούσετε brutal φωνητικά, απαγγελίες, ψίθυρους, αλλά και καθαρά. Θα μπορούσαμε να πούμε πως ο δίσκος των Μar de grises θυμίζει αρκετά τις πρώτες δουλειές των Anathema και των My dying bride. Τα κομμάτια είναι μεγάλα σε διάρκεια και αυτό που τα χαρακτηρίζει είναι οι πολλές σκοτεινές μελωδίες οι οποίες δημιουργούν μια μελαγχολική ατμόσφαιρα. Η παραγωγή είναι πολύ καλή. Συνοπτικά, το The tatterdemalion express είναι αρκετά περίπλοκος δίσκος αλλά παράλληλα είναι και πολύ καλός οπότε αν σας αρέσει ο ατμοσφαιρικός/doom metal ήχος τσεκάρετε τη δουλειά των ισπανών. A Chile-i (!) Mar De Grises mar az elso anyagan (Demo 2002) is egyeni hangzasu doom/death metal-t jatszott, most pedig itt az elso nagylemez, amelyen zeneileg egy magasabb szintre emelkedett a banda.

MAR DE GRISES wurden im Jahre 200 in Chile gegründet. Diese CD ist ihre erste Veröffentlichung seit dem Demo 2002. Die fünf Herren bieten uns melodischen Progressiven Doom Metal. Die Sieben Songs auf diesem Silberling sind sehr Abwechslungsreich arrangiert. Der erste Song der CD nennt sich „EL OTRO“ und beginnt mit tonnenschweren langsamen Gitarrenriffs. Das ganze wird von tiefen Gesang und Piano Melodien untermauert. Dadurch entsteht ein bombastischer Mix, der die Erde erzittern lässt. Der Song hat eine Laufzeit von über 11 Minuten, was allerdings für ein Doom Band nicht aussergewöhnlich ist. Damit die Musik nicht Eintönig wird, reichert die Band den Song mit einem ausgedehnten, Emotionalen Part an. Unverzerrte gaaaaanz langsame Gitarren, sanfte Piano Klänge und ein wenig Wind im Hintergrund, sorgen für ein Verträumte Stimmung. Gegen Ende des Song steigert sich das ganze noch mal und wird wieder richtig hart. „EL OTRO“ ist ein gewaltiger Song und zeigt das es die Band versteht packende Songs zu schreiben. Der zweite Song nennt sich „TO SEE SATURN FALL“ und ist deutlich schneller als der erste. Dabei klingen MAR DE GRISES Passagern weise sehr rockig und harmonisch. Auch bei diesem Song muss man nicht lange warten um eine Clean gespielte Gitarrenpassage zu hören. Allerdings ist sie hier nicht so ausgedehnt wie beim ersten Song. Gesanglich zeigt man sich hier auch von der vielseitigen Seite und liefert neben den tiefen, sehr böse klingenden Vocals auch noch unverzerrten Gesang. Gegen Ende des Songs wird es sehr abstrakt, schräge Piano klänge, schräge Gitarren, schräge Drums. Es ist sehr speziell, aber definitiv innovativ! Zum Schluss wird’s noch mal richtig nett Melodiös und ordentlich schnell. Somit kann auch „TO SEE SATURN FALL“ auf ganzer Länge überzeugen und zeigt das sich MAR DE GRISES durchaus auch eigenartige Kompositionen zutrauen. Mit beinahe 11 Minuten ist „STORM“ wieder ein etwas längerer Song. Allerdings sind schon mal 4 Minuten vergangen bis das Lied wirklich beginnt. Auch dieser Song weckt Emotionen und ist eher von der sehr ruhigen Art. Man bekommt wieder viel Unverzerrte Gitarren und sanfte Piano Klänge zu hören. Auch die härteren Songpassagen sind nicht wirklich hart und zeigen sich sehr Melodisch und Atmosphärisch. Dennoch ist „STORM“ ein phantastischer Song, der allerdings nichts für den bösartigen Metaller darstellt. Wer sich aber gern in eine einmalige Klanglandschaft entführen lassen will um in die Musik eintauchen, der wird MAR DE GRISES lieben. Eine Ultrakurz Song in Sinne der Chilenen stellt „RECKLESSNESS“ dar. Dieser Song beginnt wieder ordentlich schnell und rockt recht fett. Rhythmische Gitarren und tolle Keyboard Parts machen das Lied sehr pompös. Der Gesang klingt heisser, als würde der ärmste gleich das zeitliche segnen. „RECKLESSNESS“ ist bisher der eingänglichste Song und dürfte auch den etwas härteren Metallern gefallen. Besonders gegen Ende des Songs gibt es sogar fette Doublebass Passagen die sich ausgezeichnet zum Headbangen eigenen würden! Mit „SELF PORTRAIT NO 1“ gibt es ein reines Piano Stück. Welches sich sehr gut anhört, aber auch den letzten Metaller in die Flucht schlagen dürfte. Mit „BE WELCOME OH HIDEOUS HELL“ geht es in üblicher MAR DE GRISES Art weiter. Auch dieser Song ist von schnellerer Gangart und besticht durch coole Gitarrenklänge. Die Band baut auch bei diesem Song wieder ein beeindruckst Klangwand auf. Diverse Wechsel zwischen schnellen und langsamen Parts, sorgen für anhaltende Spannung. Mit den 7 Minütigen Schlusssong „ONIRICA“ kommen wir dem Ende der CD langsam näher. Dieser Song ist wieder durchwegs langsam gehalten und liefert wieder tolle Klangbilder. Man kann sich zum Schluss also noch mal unbeschwert den Phantastischen Klängen hingeben und abschweifen......

Zastanawiam sie, jak tym chilijskim trubadurom udalo sie dostac pod skrzydla finskiego labelu? Toz to, cholercia, drugi koniec swiata! A jednak mam wrazenie, ze dobrze trafili. Firebox specjalizuje sie bowiem w tzw. doom metalu plus jego wszelakich odmianach, a MDG smialo wpisuje sie w tradycje takiego wlasnie grania.
Osobiscie przyznam sie, ze termin doom metal brzmi dla mnie nieco staroswiecko i nie moge oprzec sie wrazeniu, ze jest to w zasadzie „skonczony” gatunek w tym sensie, ze wszystko juz w nim powiedziano.
Po prawdzie MDG nie udalo sie, wedlug mnie przynajmniej, odswiezyc stylistyki, lecz w ciekawy sposób eksploruja panowie rejony zarezerwowane dla smetnych Angoli. Czyli chilli z Chile he he he...
Nie no, powaga... Czyli muzyka obraca sie w dobrze znanych kregach wczesnej Anathemy, Cathedral, My Dying Bride – ze tak polece po znanych nazwach. Jest zatem i walcowaty rytm i potezne riffy, i klimat odpowiedni, i growl sie odezwie, ale tez na przyklad sa fajne miniaturki na pianino (Self Portrait No.1 – kapitalne z jakimis niepokojacymi echami Chopina!). A jednak przewaza granie dosc typowe. A reklamowej ulotce wytwórnia pisze, ze MDG kombinuja w „melodic prog. doom metal”... E tam, doom jak sie patrzy, taki w starym stylu, bez kompleksów nawiazujacy do tego, co juz sie w tej muzyce dawno temu zdarzylo.
Niemniej mi sie to podoba. Zawsze lubilem takie pojekiwania, monotonne, hipnotyczne kawalki po 10 albo i wiecej minut. Dlatego wystawiam przyzwoita ocene, wiecej nie moge, bo jednak malo to oryginalne...

Chilijski Mar De Grises to typowy zespól w wydawniczym profilu Firebox. Oferta tej wytwórni jest skierowana do konkretnych odbiorców, takich którzy kochaja sie w posepnych dzwiekach, wolnych tempach i grobowej atmosferze. Taki jest wlasnie ten zespól ciezki i ich doom/death metal z lekka doza melodii. Muzyka bardzo klimatyczna a jednoczesnie bardzo ciezka. Kojarzy mi sie z takim osilkiem, który moze i nie jest zbyt szybki ale jak juz kogos dorwie w swoje lapska to na 100% zmiazdzy go tak, ze z kosci zostana kawaleczki. Smutna to plyta, nostalgiczna, przepelniona dramatyzmem. Uczucia te wylewaja sie szeroka rzeka z glosników, by otoczyc sluchacza, porwac go w swój czarny wir. Jak ktos ma dola nie powinien siegac po to wydawnictwo, jak i inne z logiem Firebox, bo moze to sie skonczyc z zyletka w lazience. Majestatyczna jest ta muzyka, pelna wdzieku i swego rodzaju podnioslosci. Niby niczym nie zaskakuje, ale tak do konca nie wiadomo jaka bedzie za chwile, czym zaskoczy, jak sie zmieni. "The Tatterdemalion Express" czaruje dzwiekami, tworzy atmosfere która zapamietuje sie na bardzo dlugo. Wpleciono w ten album tez tajemniczosc, sluchajac go ma sie uczucie jakby nie wszystko bylo "pokazane", ze trzeba wglebic sie jeszcze dalej zeby odkryc to co znajduje sie glebiej. Chilijczycy przyozdobili swoje kompozycje lekkim melodyjnym ornamentem, wpletli w nie swoista orkiestralnosc a takze odrobine polamanych riffów i temp. Mar De Grises to takze brutalnosc, dzwieki doslownie potrafia skopac, sponiewierac, gitary uderzaja z furia i zwalaja z nóg, tnac po plecach. Calosc brzmi wrecz wysmienicie, slucha sie tego niemal z zapartym tchem bo na prawde ta muzyka robi wrazenie.

Mon dieu, quelle claque ! Le moins que l’on puisse dire, c’est que le mois de février rayonne au niveau doom-métal. Aujourd’hui, voici le cas de Mar de Grises, qui sort son premier album et se classe d’entrée de jeu parmi l’élite. Ce Tatterdemalion Express se place instantanément dans le cercle fermé des prétendants albums de l’année, car avec une telle maturité musicale pour un groupe qui oeuvre ici avec son premier album, c’est forcément synonyme de longévité. En tout cas, c’est tout le mal que je leur souhaite. Mar de Grises est un groupe chilien, chose assez rare pour le notifier, et évolue dans une symbiose parfaite entre Paradise Lost, My Dying Bride et Shape Of Despair. Mélodies tantôt lancinantes, tantôt agressives mais toujours touchantes, claviers très appropriés et envoûtants (Sel Portait no 1), chant clair envolé ou susurré, voici toutes les brillantes caractéristiques qui composent ce Tatterdemalion Express. Espérons que le groupe aura une longévité digne de ce brillant premier album car maintenant, nous en voulons plus. Amateur de métal en tout genre, ne passez surtout pas à côté de cette superbe pièce qui fera date pour peu que l’on veuille s’intéresser un minimum à ce groupe et croyez-moi ils le méritent énormément.

Welch ein Monument. Nach diesem Hammer wird sich der Nabel der Funeral Doom-Welt wohl in südliche Gefilde verschieben, denn waren bislang finnische Kombos das Maß aller Dinge, so haben ab jetzt die Chilenen (!) Mar de Grises bei der Manifestation der düstersten und gewaltsamsten Epen menschlicher Abgründe ein gewaltiges Wörtchen mitzureden. Mar de Grises erstarren dabei nicht in Ehrfurcht vor schweren und kataklystischen Monumentalriffs, sondern schaffen atmopshärische Zwischenparts oder inszenieren rohe Ausbrüche voller Aggressivität, wie sie intensiver nicht sein könnten. Hier werden dann auch die vielschichtigen Wurzeln der Chilenen deutlich, die ihren Ursprung eben nicht nur in der Eindimensionalität schwermetallischer Ausdrucksformen haben, sondern zugleich Bezug auf klassische Musik, Ambient, Elektronik oder Postpunk nehmen. Vor allem in den bewusst nicht metallischen Passagen erinnern Mar de Grises nicht selten an die Italiener Canaan, und wer mit deren nicht minder beeindruckenden Kunstwerken vertraut ist, wird die Intensität dieses monolithischen Meisterwerkes zu schätzen wissen. Wer sich bewusst seiner schwermütigen Stimmungen hingibt und darin zu schwelgen sucht, „The Tatterdemalion Express“ bietet dazu Gelegenheit genug.

Le doom metal de Mar de Grises n'a rien de trivial et ne cherche pas les émotions tirées de schémas récurrents mais au contraire d’une recherche approfondie sur les arcanes de la mélancolie, sur les tiraillements de l’âme, l’insurrection du malaise et nos angoisses inconscientes. Les mélodies omniprésentes se font tour à tour effrayantes ou enchanteresses et les chiliens jouent avec nos nerfs, font monter la tension à son paroxysme, assombrissent l’atmosphère et entremêlent la richesse des ambiances et la pesanteur des rythmes. L’esprit de My Dying Bride est proche mais Mar de Grises s’autorise une recherche presque progressive dans ses montages et le cheminement n’est jamais prédictible, emprunte les voies improbables et l’écoute se mue en une savoureuse perception auditive, « To See Saturn Fall » éclot vers la symphonie avant de se recroqueviller en dissonance contrôlée et manipule nos frustrations. Nos récepteurs sensoriels sont bernés, la notion de temps se dilate sur les notes diaphanes de « Storm », la beauté se fait cruauté et désespoir («Self Portrait no.1”) .
Profondément riche, surprenant et distillant avec une pertinence singulière l’intensité, «The Tatterdemalion Express» est une pièce superbe, un premier album précieux qui positionne le doom metal mélodique dans une optique nouvelle, inhabituelle et recherchée, qui requiert l’attention de l’auditeur.
Nous sommes prêts à nous investir sans retenue dans ce sens.

Tot sovint, la gran quantitat de material discogràfic que ens arriba d'Europa i Estats Units, i que ens costa tant d'assimilar en tot el seu gruix, ens impedeix percebre que en altres llocs del món es realitzen coses tant o més interessants que en el propi bressol del metall. Aquest és el cas de la banda que ens ocupa. Es tracta de Mar de Grises, un grup Xilè, que ha aconseguit amb el seu primer disc una molt bona, i merescuda, benvinguda, que l'ha permès aconseguir cert ressò més enllà de l'Atlàntic.

Mar de Grises és un d'aquells grups que més d'una vegada hem lloat perquè, tot i no haver descobert la cervesa, sí que poden dir, amb tot orgull, que han aconseguit elaborar-ne una de realment deliciosa. És a dir, "The Tatterdemalion Express" (aquest títol mereix entrar per la porta gran als anyals de la frikeria) és un disc que recull el millor que s'ha fet a Halifax en la darrera dècada per donar-li una nova dimensió i aportar-li el seu propi caràcter i feeling.

El resultat de tot això, és un disc de dens i opressor doom metal que aconsegueix crear increïbles passatges i textures, que es mouen amb total llibertat entre la passió i l'apocalipsi a través de les diverses pistes del cd. Els petits tocs de Funeral Doom nascuts de l'escola Skepticism, ajuden a acabar de crear un paisatge musical totalment devastador i asfixiant, que ens permet endinsar-nos totalment en una fi del món creada per la nostra imaginació i de la qual no ens en volem perdre el més mínim detall.

Temes com "To See Saturn Fall" esdevindran, de ben segur, una futura referència per a tot amant dels sons densos, pesats i depressius, convertint a Mar de Grises en un dels grups a tenir molt presents en els pròxims anys.

Les chiliens ( et oui, vous ne rêvez pas !) de MAR DE GRISES, formés en 2000, sortent ici leur tout premier album, qui place la barre bien haute en matière de doom.

Nous connaissions Skepticism ou les excellents finlandais de Shapes of dispair, et bien voici les ténébreux chiliens, qui nagent en pleine dépression, avec des titres dark/doom, lents et lourds ( néanmoins moins que Shape of dispair, niveau basse !! ), et avec une multitude d'arrangements très atmosphériques, ainsi que de superbes incursions au piano ( ou entièrement au piano comme le titre ' Self portrait' ) et des belles mélodies aux guitares acoustiques...

Mélange entre du metal progressif et du doom , le tout est très mélodique, sombre à souhait, avec un chant d'outre tombe bien dark, mélange entre du Carl mc Coy ( Nephilim ) , du Shape O.D ou du Anathema , le tout s'écoute sans ennui et nous donne envie de voyager à travers les limbes du néant...

Amis dépressifs, retrouvez la joie de vivre, car avec un album qui frôle ainsi la perfection, c'est tout bonnement déprimant !

Die Chilenen MAR DE GRISES präsentieren auf ihrem Debütalbum “The Tatterdemalion Express“ deftige Schwerkost. Allzu viel ist über das Quintett nicht in Erfahrung zu bringen. Nur so viel, dass im Jahre 2002 erstmals ein Demo veröffentlicht wurde. MAR DE GRISIS zelebrieren astreinen Doom Metal, der stark an den alten MY DYING BRIDE-Sachen angelehnt ist, aber auch phasenweise Parallelen zu TIAMATs “Wildhoney“ aufweist. Alle sieben Stücke sind von Melancholie und Trauer geprägt.

Die Namen Marcelo Rodriguez (v, key), Rodrigo Morris (g), Sergio Alvarez (g), Rodrigo Galvez (b), Alejandro Arce (dr) sollte man sich sicherheitshalber einmal merken, denn man wird mit Sicherheit noch mehr von MAR DE GRISIS hören. Zäh fließen die zumeist überlangen Kompositionen aus den Lautsprechern und bauen sich wie eine Wand auf. Fette Gitarren, sphärische Klänge und mächtige Drums bestimmen den Sound der Chilenen. Die teils in englisch, teils in spanisch verfassten Texte werden unterschiedlich intoniert. Depressiver melancholisch schwerer Sprechgesang wechselt sich mit aggressivem leidgeprägtem Growling ab. Die Grundstimmung in allen Stücken ist tieftraurig gehalten und lässt sämtliche aufkommenden Frühlingsgefühle bereits im Keime ersticken. Der Hörer droht in tiefste Depressionen abzustürzen, um kurz vor dem Fall durch einen Stimmungswechsel wieder aufgefangen zu werden.

"The Tatterdemalion Express" ist sicherlich kein Album für jede Stimmungslage und Tageszeit. Dafür nehmen die Stücke den Hörer zu sehr in Anspruch. Seine düstere Magie entfaltet die Scheibe sicherlich vollends in einer tristen Winternacht im Scheine leuchtender Kerzen. Die Kompositionen sind äußerst komplex und sehr durchstrukturiert, daher entfaltet sich die Blüte und Klasse der Stücke erst nach mehrmaligem Durchhören. Diese Scheibe hört man nicht so nebenher!

Bereits der Opener ’El Otro’ ist ein sperriges Klanggebilde mit einer Laufzeit von über zehn Minuten und stellt zugleich das längste Stück des Albums dar. Durch die gelungene Produktion gelingt es, die Musik mal bombastisch, mal zerbrechlich erklingen zu lassen. MAR DE GRISIS entführen gekonnt in abstrakte Klangwelten wie in ’To See Saturn Fall’. Für ein wenig Entspannung sorgt die emotionale Pianonummer ’Self Portrait No. 1’. Ausfälle sind keine zu vermelden, so dass ich ohne weiteres "The Tatterdemalion Express" allen Freunden der oben beschriebenen Zielgruppe wärmstens empfehlen kann. Das Album bringt es auf eine beachtliche Gesamtlänge von 56 Minuten. Ein kunstvolles Booklet rundet "The Tatterdemalion Express" ab.

Well, well, this band from Chile already impressed me quite a bit with their 4-track demo which was released in 2001. Now they deliver us their debut filled with doom/death that at sometimes borders to funeral doom but also incorporates various other styles as well. Listening to this 7 song album I’m even more impressed because these guys simply know how to write excellent songs with a lot of variety. They even manage to incorporate chaotic parts within their songs that still sound very logical although it’s a cacophony of sounds. Two tracks were already present on the demo but sound wise they got so much better on this album. Vocalist Marcello uses his vocals to the max he seems to be able to do anything. I am really glad this band scored a deal because next to countrymen Poema Arcanus Mar de Grises is worth checking out. I might go on for hours about this release but I’m keeping it short. I just want to finish off with the following order from me to you. Go get this album; it’s one of the freshest albums within doom that has been released in a long time.

La banda chilena Mar De Grises con este disco debut de inmediato pasa a liderar junto a Poema Arcanus toda la corriente doom metal que existe no solo en Chile, sino en Sudamérica, su propuesta no es la típica muestra cliché de doom gótico ni vampiresco, sino que muy por el contrario una tenue pero esparcida oscuridad es lo que encierra su música, la cual goza de variados matices en un contexto ambiental con toques progresivos y melódicos, por otra parte la desgarrada vocalización de Marcelo Rodríguez alimenta una negra atracción que te deja llevar por un viaje mental a lugares recónditos en tu subconsciente que solo con la música de Mar De Grises puedes alcanzar.

Todo comienza con la siniestra composición: ’El Otro’ que de inmediato muestra la tragedia sonora donde nos sumerge Mar De Grises, buena dupla en las seis cuerdas por parte de Rodrigo Morris y Sergio Alvarez quienes junto a Rodríguez (teclados) le dan una tremenda atmósfera más ambiental. Uno de los cortes más extensos del disco. Luego viene ’To See Saturn Fall’, tema que al comienzo no puedo dejar de recordar a My Dying Bride, después este corte se torna más denso en la melodía, y los teclados vuelven a darle el toque más siniestro. Ya con ’Storm’ todo se torna más psicodélico por decirlo de algún modo, con la solidez de Alejandro Arce en batería y Rodrigo Gálvez en el bajo, aquí nuevamente aparece la veta más death, la que está presente en la mayoría de los temas, sin dejar de lado las pinceladas susurrantes que son acompañada de lentas melodía de puro doom metal clásico que bordean lo lento y real. ’Recklessness’ es la próxima parada con buenos arreglos en guitarra, bajo y teclado, para después caer en una atmósfera más psicodélica, la que no exenta de cierta melancolía y que cada vez la música se torna más profunda. Continuando en este viaje (¿sin retorno?) nos encontramos con el bello instrumental en piano ’Self Portrait No.1’, que nos entrega una emotividad esperada. Ya casi finalizando este disco nos volvemos a tropezar con los sonidos más trágicos en ’Be Welcome Oh Hideous Hell’ donde la pesadez del doom se hace notar, aún cuando este álbum no sea tan "pesado" en líneas generales, sino más bien ambiental y melódico. Aquí podemos hallar más arreglos en la batería y la voz, más las guitarras que caen en lo progresivo. Mucha más atmósfera y más cambios hacen de este uno de los cortes más completo del disco. Por último ’Onírica’ es la psicodelia misma que te hace descender de este viaje, todo lentamente y calmado, es como ir despertando de un sueño, del cual no quieres hacerlo.

Lo importante es que Mar De Grises con este disco no solo deja la vara alta para los otros grupos, sino que toda la atmósfera, la oscuridad y la sensibilidad que derrochan con estos temas, se percibe de gran forma, "The Tatterdemalion Express" cumple su cometido. Excelente debut de esta banda nacional. ¡Felicitaciones a sus integrantes!...

Sometimes an album of undespicable allure falls into my mailbox. Unannounced and equipped with a biography hardly worth mentioning. I knew nothing of Mar De Grises. Never heard of them, and if our lovely chief editor wouldn’t have send the album to me, it probably would have stayed like that. But it didn’t.

I am not much of a doom fan but The Tatterdemalion Express (TTE) reached out to me like Judgement of Anathema (not realy a doom album, but hey) did a few years ago. There’s elements in their sound that speak to me. The drama, the sorrowful melodies, the sheer deprivation that color the vocals, the layers, the x-factor. This progressive doom band from Chile (of all places) bring to us songs like the grooving epic mid tempo charger “To See Saturn Fall”, the weeping “El Otro” and five more devastating tracks.

Each song takes all the time it needs to put all the pieces in just the right place. The multi-layered production does the rest.

A track like “To See Saturn Fall” is so crammed with riffs and ideas, it sounds like ten songs in a row, with numerous silences, breaks, samples, up tempo parts, keyboard and piano intervals, it’s just too much to mention. The one element that might get you down on your knees are Marcelo Rodriquez’s vocals. At times he really sounds like the wind. Kinda hard to explain. More variation there would have made TTE truly stunning.

Mar De Grises delivers some hot'n'spicey chili from Chile with their debut album "The Tatterdemalion Express". Well, it's rather doomy and gloomy metal than anything else really. The Chilean band, consisting of Marcelo Rodrigues (vocals/keys), Rodrigo Morris (guitar), Sergio Alvarez (guitar), Rodrigo Galvez (bass) and Alejandro Arce (drums), are very much into atmospheric rock.

Their main focus is perhaps doom, but you can surely find both prog, electronic, and death metal into their material. You can actually compare this with My Dying Bride (MDB from now on) in many ways. They are trying to build up an similar atmosphere of music and I'm sure they've been listening to MDB a lot in the past. Throw in some Samael influences while you're at it too and you'll be closer to the core.

I'm not too fond of Rodriguez voice or rather the lack of it. He's mostly "lost" somewhere in the background and it's hard to tell what the lyrics are all about. Not that growls usually means understandable lyrics (heh, heh), but the vocals aren't exactly my favorite part of the mixing here. The production by Raphael France (Poema Arcanus, Iconoclast) is otherwise quite nice though. The constantly aggressive guitar work, shred their pain throughout your loudspeakers, while the drums are simply doomy and fat as a cat. Mar De Grises may not have created the perfect debut album here. It could however well be worth checking out, if you're a major fan of MDB and doomy, atmospheric metal.

I'll tell you there is nothing like getting a musical smack upside the head when you're not paying attention. I'd not heard of Mar de Grises, but knowing the band was on the Firebox label caught my attention pretty quickly. Both the band name and the album name are slightly out-of-the-ordinary but somehow memorable despite the obvious fact that you just might not know what Mar de Grises or even "The Tatterdemallion Express" means.

In any case, Mar de Grises is a Chilean band that roots all of their songs in the doom metal style, but you'd never know it from listening. Mar de Grises' style is an expansive, staggering palette of goth, doom, and death metal and a few other things I can't quite put my finger on at the moment. One might even say Mar de Grises is a progressive doom band – it's not often one can say that about a band. Anyway, I'm finding it quite difficult to put into words exactly how I feel about "The Tatterdemallion Express" only because I simply want to enjoy it for the great record that it is.

Without a doubt, "The Tatterdemallion Express" will not appeal to fans who only like a single metallic genre or are narrow-minded about their preferences. Metal fans with an open mind will appreciate Mar de Grises' "The Tatterdemallion Express" as a work of art as well as a metal album of the highest regard.

Mar De Grises afkomstig uit het verre Chili ontstond in het begin van deze eeuw en bracht twee jaar later een demo uit. Anno 2004 komt de formatie met hun eerste album 'The Tatterdemalion Express'. De muziek van Mar De Grises zit vol met sfeerbeelden en eigenzinnige elementen, wat ook nog met een zeker live-feel wordt gespeeld. De soms erg rustige passages en pianostukken worden met melodramatisch gevoel gecomponeerd door deze heren. De zware Doom metal komt door de productie goed over en wat typerend is voor Mar De Grises, is dat ze wel degelijk naar de old-school Doom bands uit Engeland hebben geluisterd. De band manifesteert zichzelf door voor zowel blastbeats en gruntstem als trotse dubbelbas patronen te kiezen. De subtiele sfeergeluiden leiden je naar donkere en duistere werelden gevoed met dolende geesten. Als je zo de hele cd enkele keren hebt gehoord krijg je toch de indruk dat Mar De Grises de songs iets wil meegeven door de sfeer-elementen goed uit te bouwen. Bijvoorbeeld in het nummer 'To See Saturn Fall' hoor je loodzware gitaar partijen en zwevende zang lijnen. Ook klassiek wordt gebruikt wat de muziek meer transparantie geeft. De zeven nummers tellende cd duurt 56 minuten en is voor Doom metal geïnteresseerden zeker interessant.

Bei Promo-CDs aus Chile erwarte ich eigentlich Urwald Death Metal der geschwindigkeitsmäßig in der Liga „Rhesusaffe“ anzusiedeln ist. Doch weit gefehlt, denn das Label scheint ja langsam Garant für qualitativ hochwertigen Doom Metal zu werden, denn so ist es zumindest wieder bei MAR DE GRISES. Die Chilenen haben existieren seit 2000 und haben auch schon einen Nachwuchswettbewerb gewonnen. Und dass sie Talent haben kann ich nach mehrmaligem Genuss des Debüts auch bestätigen. „The Tatterdenalion Express“ hat alles, was ein Doom Album braucht, tiefdunkle Melodien, abwechslungsreiche Songs, schwermütige Gitarren und interessante Keyboard- und Pianoklänge. Texte liegen mir leider nicht vor, aber ich denke, sie werden nicht vom letzten Grillfest oder ihrer Zivildienstverweigerung handeln. Echt starke Leistung!

É fato que a América do Sul não tem uma grande tradição neste melancólico gênero metálico que é o doom metal, sendo as bandas sul-americanas desse estilo desconhecidas não só do público europeu como até mesmo de seus próprios países. Porém, aos poucos esta situação tende a mudar, e The Tatterdemalion Express, debut do Mar de Grises será uma das armas para tal. O som da banda vai desde o doom metal mais atmosférico até o "clássico" death/doom, sendo essas variações na medida certa. Com uma excelente produção e personalidade única a banda prende o ouvinte em sua melancólica atmosfera desde a primeira faixa, "El Otro..." até a peculiar "Onírica", que é uma das mais calmas do álbum, onde é predominante os sussurros e uma atmosfera mais melódica, porém triste. Um fato interessante neste álbum é sua continuidade, mesmo havendo diferenças entre as músicas, quase todas são uma espécie de continuação da música anterior (para alguns, pode lembrar o álbum Judgement do Anathema neste quesito) evitando aquela sensação de "quebra-clima", prendendo o ouvinte em 56 minutos de melancolia, e puro doom metal, bem tocado, bem produzido, com uma proposta original e sem dúvida sendo um dos melhores lançamentos do gênero neste continente até então, e sem dúvida algo que merece a atenção dos doomsters de todo o mundo.

La musique de Mars de Grises est extrêmement mélancolique, à la limite du malsain, bourrée d'angoisse.

D'une très grande richesse, emprunt d'originalité, surprenant, cet album est véritablement excellent. Il redonne sans problème au doom metal mélodique ses lettres de noblesses et l'oriente probablement vers une nouvelle voie à explorer.

Wer auf die frühen Werke von My Dying Bride, Anathema oder auch Tiamat steht, sollte den Chilenen von Mar de Grises einmal ein Ohr schenken. Die lasten einem nämlich tonnenschweren Doom auf die Schultern, der sich zäh und düster von der ersten bis zur letzten Minuten schleppt. Entmenschlichte Growls werden dabei streckenweise durch klaren Gesang durchmischt; Kummer, den man inzwischen von solchen Platten gewohnt ist. Einst war das originell, heute würde man es wohl auch schon mal als lästig bezeichnen. Problematisch ist aber vor allem eins an dieser Platte: wie die meisten Bands aus diesem Genre geht es Mar de Grises nicht um den einzelnen Song, sondern um ein grundsätzliches Gefühl, das durch die Musik vermittelt werden soll. Das macht The Tatterdemalion Express recht anstrengend, da es nur wenig Aufhänger beim Hören gibt. Wenn man es anders sieht, ist dies natürlich auch ein Markenzeichen, das Anhänger solcher Klänge von einer solchen Band erwarten. Mir persönlich bieten sich im Moment allerdings wenig Gelegenheiten, wo ich eine solche Platte auflegen kann. Der Frühling kommt und da wünscht man sich eher etwas leichtes. Mar de Grises werde ich daher frühestens zum Herbst wieder auspacken. Vielleicht entfaltet die CD dann ihre Wirkung.

The Finnish label FIREBOX records was introduced to you in the previous review of mini album of Finnish band TYRANNY. I was really wrong when I thought that this label could released something faster than is slow metal. They are probably really specialized in slowlier jewels. This time they took band MAR DE GRISES under their wings. This band comes from Chile, that´s exotic as hell?! The members are long time moving between the beautiful doom waves, to be exact it´s since 2000. They have released one demo and this album. It´s nice that in Chile there is even relax music because as I look back I know lots of grind core and other crazy bands. I hope that you know that to say they rank they are in that it doesn´t mean anything. Better read it all because then you wouldn´t know that there are some very nice tasteful pieces which you haven´t even dreamed about. Imagine a crew of five guys which try to mix various kinds of styles into one big composition called „The Tatterdemalion Express“, doesn´t it sound lyrical? As I could got known these melody makers tried to find out their own music which would be the nearest to their hearts. Isn´t it fine to try to find such thing in the age of copy music, cheap bands copying each other and earning money on it? I like sad music and to tell you truth MAR DE GRISES are really good at it. Sometimes you feel like your eyes are closing because you are not believing them. Why? Because of the length of the each songs. MAR DE GRISES can hug your mind with progress, classic, post rock music even ambient electronic. They can also play nice composed death metal; there´s some grr sexy clear male vocal behind the mic again, mm it can be ;o)! They can also surprise you with more black metal parts mainly talking about the raven´s screams or growling growls. This is really fine doom mixed with so many not metal styles that it´s original that I´m sure it couldn´t be more. MAR DE GRISES took my heart and let my tears dropped out. They woke up dark daemons, let the sun went down in the middle of sunny afternoon and they gone. This super long material is really well done and this happens rarely once in X years. I know some masters of slow music and this are MY DYING BRIDE which I like a lot, maybe this is generation next? Good sound, nice relaxing album!

Mar De Grises überraschen den Hörer gleich in mehreren Punkten. Zum einen stammt der Fünfer aus Chile, was an sich noch nichts Ungewöhnliches ist, aber in Kombination mit der gespielten, äußerst doomlastigen, Düstermucke durchaus Exotenstatus genießt. Außerdem wird man der selbst auferlegten Stilbeschreibung des progressiven und melodischen Doom-Metals nur bedingt gerecht. Viel zu oft schiebt man sich zwischen irgendwelche Grenzen und erschließt neues Terrain. Um möglichen Missverständnissen gleich aus dem Wege zu gehen, sei angemerkt, dass Mar De Grises keineswegs in genreuntypischen Stilkisten wühlen, dafür aber die Tiefen melancholischer und emotionaler Musik gekonnt durchdringen. Ich würde jetzt gerne eine Band nennen, die den Stil von Mar De Grises unverwechselbar kennzeichnet, dies fällt aber angesichts des gebotenen Hörerlebnisses nicht ganz einfach. Sicher bieten sich Bands wie "My Dying Bride" oder "Grey Skies Fallen" an, aber wirklich vergleichbar sind die Südamerikaner in ihrer Gesamtheit auch mit diesen Bands nicht. Gleich der überlange Opener "El Otro" ist ein schwer verdaulicher Brocken, der sich kontinuierlich steigert und den Spannungsbogen bis zum Ende hin gespannt hält. Das nachfolgende "To See Saturn Fall" löst sich etwas von den gar Funeral-Doom lastigen Vorgänger und geht gleich zu Beginn etwas heftiger zu Werke. Mar De Grises arbeiten bei diesem Stück in vielen Teilen mit Disharmonien, die es dem Hörer nicht einfacher machen, in das schon ohnehin vertrackte Werk einzutauchen. "Be Welcome Oh Hideous Hell" erscheint zwar im ersten Moment etwas geradliniger, gewinnt aber im weiteren Verlauf immer mehr an Komplexität und ist wohl das progressivste Stück auf "The Tatterdemalion Express". So manche progressiven "Entgleisungen" erinnern mich dabei, wenn auch nur weit entfernt, an die Italiener "Ephel Duath". Mar De Grises haben mit "The Tatterdemalion Express" einen noch recht jungfräulichen Pfad eingeschlagen und erschaffen ein Werk, das großen Respekt verdient hat. Respekt ist allerdings ein Wort, welches meist in Verbindung mit einem gewissen Zweifel steht. So auch bei Mar De Grises, die zweifelsohne das Prädikat "Innovativ“" verdient haben, aber in meinen Augen mit einem Problem zu kämpfen haben. Die sperrigen Songs mit den vielen versteckten Kleinigkeiten und Finessen lassen sich nur sehr schwer durchdringen und wer sich nicht die Mühe macht zumindest einen Song ohne äußere Einflüsse entdecken zu wollen, wird die Scheibe wahrscheinlich gar nicht wahrnehmen, wenn sie im Player rotiert, oder als Durschnittsgedudel abtun. Ich kann nur sagen, so schwer mir der Einstieg fiel und ich mich anfangs auch nicht zu mehr als einem anerkennenden Nicken hinreißen lies, desto mehr Beachtung findet die Scheibe bei intensiverem Hinhören. Eine Band, die auf dem richtigen Weg ist, auch wenn man sie "noch" nicht vollends verstehen muss. (Norman / 09.05.2004)

Following a successful demo amongst the Doom Metal community in 2002, Chileans MAR DE GRISES offer their debut full length clocking in at over 55 minutes. This is the first time I hear them and I find that this is the kind of CD you really have to listen to a lot in order to really get what the band is doing. It also depends a lot on what kind of mood you are in when you hear it. Sometimes I like it more than other times. The music is a sort of disturbing, eclectic mixture of progressive arrangements, weaving melodies, aggressive death growls with some clean vocals and mostly the pace is very slow and dragging. Much attention and detail has been paid to making sure that the listener is plummeted into a sad, confused state of mind. I guess my only "complaint" is that often you can´t really tell much difference between the songs. Not really a big deal because the more you listen the more you unravel the music. If tortured emotions are the norm for you then this would be a good soundtrack to your misery.

It is widely known that if you want to hear some good Doom Metal bands, you have to turn your head to Firebox Records, this Finnish label has been releasing top-notch Doom Metal bands for a while now. Now, in a smart move they signed Chilean act MAR DE GRISES and released their first full-length album, “The Tatterdemalion Express”. Chile, along with Brazil, is one of the strongest Heavy Metal scenes here in South America and the greatest thing of the Chilean scene is that you can find almost every genre of Metal on their streets, from Gothic to Doom.

Along with their compatriots POEMA ARCANUS, MAR DE GRISES carry the South American Doom Metal flag and like POEMA ARCANUS, they succeed with honors in such an endeavor. As soon the CD arrived here, I was very excited about listening to and reviewing the debut of my South American brothers and let me tell you that I wasn’t disappointed. First of all, the band has improved a lot visually, the logo and the CD art is gorgeous, a truly eye-catcher.

Musically, MAR DE GRISES play Progressive Doom Metal, with a wide range of influences, like Rock and classical music, but the structure of the band is a very solid Doom/Death Metal. Seven lengthy songs show us the broad variety of musical tastes that these guys possess, from a rough start with “El Otro” (The Other), we know that we’re not dealing with one of those super-slow Doom bands that repeat the same riffs for 15 minutes, MAR DE GRISES have long songs, but know how to take advantage of the time to create so many atmospheres in one song.

“To See Saturn Fall” contains harmonic structures and fast paced tempo entangled in a web of distorted guitars, all of this suddenly stops to give room to a fantastic intermezzo, emotional clean singing takes place in this clean break. Slow start we get with “Storm”, this song slowly builds up on accords and background noises, to finally develop into this slow and pounding-riff driven masterpiece. Nice classical piano takes the lead on “Recklessness”, this song is full of clean singing, emotional and deep voice of Marcelo Rodriguez is one of the best assets of this band. Have you ever imagined Beethoven playing dark, sinister music? Well, just listen to “Self Portrait No1” a instrumental piano piece, so dark yet so romantic at the same time.

The last 2 tracks represent the black and the white, one aggressive and dismal, the other slow and self-indulgent, perfect way to close an album, a whisper that fades away…

I’m not joking when I said that this CD is a must have for any fan of Doom Metal, if you doubt how good can a Doom Metal band from Chile or South America in general be, you have one of the best expositors right here, so please do yourself a favor and check them out and after you’re done with “The Tatterdemalion Express”, try some POEMA ARCANUS.

It makes me proud to see such talented bands emerging from neighbor countries like Chile, bands like this demonstrate that South America has a lot to offer to the world and labels like Firebox do great on giving these kind of acts a chance. (Online April 28, 2004)

Thanks to the outstanding POEMA ARCANUS, Chile already has a good reputation in the Doom scene and when I had read in the info of MAR DE GRISES’ “The Tatterdemalion Express“ that this quintet also hails from this South American country, I was very interested. Just like TYRANNY released via Finland’s Doom specialists Firebox, “The Tatterdemalion Express“ is the first album after a demo in 2002.

But MAR DE GRISES by no means is the usual Doom, but the expression Progressive Doom Metal could not have been chosen any better as the gentlemen Marcelo Rodriguez (v, key), Rodrigo Morris (g), Sergio Alvarez (g), Rodrigo Galvez (b) and Alejandro Arce (dr) take Doom and enrich it with elements from Death Metal, Gothic Metal, Ambient, Classical and Progressive Metal and process it all into a pretty hard to digest dough, which might sound somewhat hostile when hearing for the first time and make it a hard access right up front.

Complex, hard to digest, damn heavy and also pretty original are the 56 minutes of this album, which takes the listener onto a demanding journey through the CD, which for sure is anything but boring. Building on a very melancholic/sad foundation, MAR DE GRISES form a wall of sound that is mighty, at times almost seemingly overwhelming, with heavy guitars, spheric keyboards and equally variable vocals, which reach from aggressively growled to tormented sounding spoken vocals and further underline the different hues of the compositions.

“The Tatterdemalion Express“ is an album that takes up all of your attention, the almost twelve minute opener “El Otro“ is a bulky chunk that almost blocks the access to this album and where you have to show the will to bite through, but once you manage that and give the album your full concentration, then the very complex compositions start to unfold more and more with each repeated listen, even though they at times get pretty damn abstract as on “To See Saturn Fall“ or “Be Welcome Oh Hideous Hell“. On the other hand the Chileans present us with an emotional piano instrumental titled „Self Portrait No. 1“, which forms a sort of breather and fits MAR DE GRISES as much as the closing “Onírica”, which is altogether a bit calmer (than the rest of the album) and more atmospheric, which both show us a slightly different side of the band.

The production by Marcelo Rodríguez and Rodrigo Gálvez is clear and powerful, just the way this sound needs it to be and the cover by Slaine is equally unusual and fascinating and rounds off the whole thing very nicely.

All in all “The Tatterdemalion Express“ definitely is not suited for everyone, even when you are Doom fans, try to check out the sound samples to see, if you are able to take on MAR DE GRISES, you have to be pretty hard boiled and invest some patience and will. Oh, and make sure that your razors, sleeping pills, knives, guns and poison bottles are far away and not openly in front of you on the table, because otherwise I won’t take any responsibility for what “The Tatterdemalion Express“ will do to you! Mar De Grises, eine Band aus dem südlichen Chile, wurde im Juli 2002 gegründet. Nun ist es ja so, dass südamerikanische Metalbands sich schon Respekt eingehandelt haben. Daher nicht verwunderlich, dass uns eine neue Formation im Januar erreicht, die gleich ein Debütalbum mit sich bringt. Mar de Grises beschreiten den dunklen Pfad des Doom Metals mit ihrem Album
"The Tatterdemalion Express". Und das klingt gar nicht mal so schlecht...

Eingeleitet wird das Album mit dem Opener "El otro", der insgesamt 11 Minuten geht und eine Menge zu bieten hat. Druckvolle Gitarrenläufe in bester Doom Metal Manier erklingen hier recht dominant, wie eingängige Keyboardpassagen. Auch die Vocals sind nicht all zu schief geraten, obwohl man schon weitaus besseres gehört hat. Allerdings glänzt der Songs durch ständige Wechsel der Aggressivität, mal extrem, mal melancholisch, bietet dieser Opener eine gelungene Einstiegspartition. Das sehr ruhige Stück "Storm" erinnert an depressive, lange Regennächte, diese Atmosphäre wird eigentlich gut von der Band herübergebracht.

"Self Portrait No. 1" wartet mit anmutigen Pianoklängen auf, die sehr melancholisch herüber kommen. Melodisch erklingen die beiden letzten Songs "Be Welcome oh hideous hell" und "Onirica", wobei der letzte sehr auf die Tränendrüse drückt.Mar de Grises setzt vor allem auf klassische Instrumente, wie Piano oder Flöte in den letzten Liedern. So erhält die Platte einen sehr traurigen Touch.

Das Debüt von Mar De Grises ist allen in Allem recht gut ausgefallen. Ich wusste nicht, dass Südamerikaner so melancholisch sein können. Reiner Doom sind leider nur ein paar Songs, die anderen sind schlicht zu depressiv oder melancholisch ausgefallen. Aber die Band wird sicher noch einiges hinzulernen, da bin ich sicher.

Chilenian band Mar De Grises has released a demo previous to ‘The tatterdemalion express’ which is their debut album. The ground fundament in the music is doom metal, but as the band put it themselves with elements of progressive rock, classical music and also some death metal and even some electronical influences. During the hour that the album lasts we get seven relatively long compositions. This is actually not bad at all. The music is very atmospheric with ok production. In limited doses this works very well, but a whole hour of this kind of music becomes too much for this reviewer. Fans of doom metal will probably enjoy ‘The tatterdemalion express’ anyway.

Slow and depressive, that’s how ‘El Otro’; the first song on this album, starts. After only heard this; 11 minutes long, song Mar de Grises convinced me already with their quality. Their mid-tempo melodic doom metal includes many quiet intermezzos and the band doesn’t limit their borders playing only doom metal. During the album we hear influences from Progressive rock/metal, ambient/electronic, post-rock and even classical music flow skillfully into the melancholic tunes of their music.
Mar de Grises from Chile released only one demo before and ‘The Tatterdemalion Express’ is their debut album, although you can’t hear that really, this album sounds very experienced. Not only the music is great and well composed, also the producer did a very good job and same goes for the artwork which translates the minor-feeling of the music perfectly into a beautiful dark piece of art.
Trademark of the sound of Mar de Grises are the sad guitar melodies; mostly played in the infamous My Dying Bride style, the heavy thundering drums, the beautiful piano-lines and the vocals; which goes from the deepest and most dark grunts till hopeful clean parts that reminds me to Anathema.
No, I can’t say this albums is a very original sounding release; yet it’s played with so much passion and emotion that the tunes from the songs directly penetrate into your soul. And that’s what makes this release special and interesting for more than only melodic-doom fanatics.

Le Chili n'est pas à proprement parler l'un des groupes leaders de la scène metal, et ce, même en Amérique du sud où il faut bien l'avouer on n'entend très peu parler de ce groupe dans le domaine qui nous est cher. Cependant, voilà que coup sur coup deux groupes originaires de ce pays viennent de me surprendre très agréablement. Le premier d'entre eux est CRIMINAL qui bien qu'exilé en Angleterre n'en demeure pas moins un groupe chilien dont "No gods no masters", le dernier album en date sorti récemment chez Metal Blade est une pure merveille de thrash power. Si CRIMINAL est déjà un groupe connu, il en est tout autrement de MAR DE GRISES qui déboule après trois années d'existence et une démo sortie en 2002 avec un premier album qui sort sur un label finlandais. Bien loin du thrash power de leurs compatriotes de CRIMINAL, le quintet qui compose MAR DE GRISES évolue dans un doom metal mélodique progressif de grande classe. Loin des gimmicks classiques et inhérents au style, MAR DE GRISES ne s'appuie pas sur des vocaux pleurnichards ou des lignes de synthés téléphonées pour nous arracher des émotions sincères. Si le piano et les claviers sont bels et bien présents, ils ne sont ici que des élèments parmis d'autres qui font de la musique de mAR DE GRISES, un ensemble riche, complexe mais en même temps limpide et lumineux. Construits autour de riffs et des mélodies efficaces les morceaux de "The tattrerdemalion express" différent tous bien les un des autres, on y passe allègrement de passages calmes au piano à des déchainements déchirants de guitares ou à des parties emplies d'étranges dissonances ("Onirica"), le tout toujours en douceur et sans le moindre heurt. Le morceau "Storm" n'a pas été sans me rappelé un titre du "Pity love" de BEYOND DAWN (du moins au début du morceau, la suite différant beaucoup). Le chant toujours présent reste relativement discret, il est bien souvent murmuré, comme s'il ne voulait pas troubler l'équilibre créé par la musique. Alors certes, il est impossible de ne pas evoquer ici MY DYING BRIDE mais l'influence du groupe anglais est parfaitement digéré et MAR DE GRISES propose déjà sa propre vision du genre, une vision impressionnante de maturité pour un premier album et qui nous autorise à voir en MAR DE GRISES (ce nom sonne quand même très bizarre en français, vous ne trouvez pas ? Moi, je n'arrive pas à m'y faire en tout cas) l'un des futurs grands du style.

Kein leichter Tobak, den uns die Chilenen Mar De Grises hier vorsetzen. Die Band beschreibt ihren Stil selbst als „Melodic Progressive Doom Metal“, was die Chose ganz gut beschreibt, aber letztlich auch nur die halbe Wahrheit ist. Mar De Grises setzen sich noch viel geschickter zwischen alle Schubladen, als man anhand der Stilbeschreibung annehmen könnte. Eine vergleichbare Band fällt mir jedenfalls nicht ein. Klar, manche Fragmente kann man einer bestimmen Band zuordnen (mir fallen da spontan My Dying Bride oder Daylight Dies ein), doch die Gesamtheit führt diese wieder ad absurdum.

Die Band setzt hauptsächlich auf überlange Songs, was „The Tatterdemalion Express“ nicht gerade eingängiger gestaltet. Trotzdem schafft es die Band die Songs über die gesamte Distanz spannend zu halten, was zum Beispiel der beinahe 12 Minuten lange Opener „El Otro“ eindrucksvoll beweist. Die Spannungskurve des Songs läuft klar exponential, sodass der ganz große Ohrgasmus bis zum Schluss auf sich warten lässt, dann allerdings Gänsehaut im Quadratmeter verbreitet. Beim majestätischen „Too See Saturn Fall“ bauen Mar De Grises geschickt disharmonische Elemente (Stichwort: Cult Of Luna) ein, die den Leidensweg, den Sänger/Keyboarder Marcelo Rodríguez zuvor gesanglich beschreitet noch intensiver erscheinen lassen – bis der Song im Audiochaos endet.

Sehr gut gemacht, keine Frage, doch trotzdem werden hier auch die Schwachpunkte der Scheibe deutlich: So gut die Songs sein mögen, man bleibt immer nur der Zuhörer. In die Scheibe geistig einzudringen ist fast unmöglich. Die Songs bieten wenig Eintauchmöglichkeiten, was ich sehr schade finde, da man Gefahr läuft, die Scheibe einfach zu überhören, wenn sie rotiert. Will sagen: Irgendwie fehlt teilweise trotz wunderschönen Melodien und klanglichen Abgründen der Zwang, der „The Tatterdemalion Express“ zu einem außergewöhnlichen Werk der Spitzenklasse machen würde. So bleibt „nur“ ein gutes und originelles Album übrig, welches toleranten Trauerweiden ganz gut reinlaufen könnte.

Mar De Grises sind auf dem richtigen Weg. „The Tatterdemalion Express“ lässt dich stellenweise mit offenem Mund dastehen – doch leider insgesamt etwas zu selten. Ich verbleibe: Tolle Band mit großem Potential, die ein Album aufgenommen hat, welches in der Szene ruhig ein wenig Staub aufwirbeln darf.

Había leído muy buenas cosas sobre este grupo chileno, pero jamás había oído su música. Editaron una maqueta hace algún tiempo, haciendo un trabajo de promoción muy bueno, lo cual unido a la calidad de su música les ayudó a crearse un nombre en la escena underground incluso antes de sacar su primer disco. No es fácil ser original en tu debut, pero ellos lo han conseguido. ‘The Tatterdemalion Express’ es claramente Doom Metal, pero no el típico Doom que estamos acostumbrados a escuchar. Su música es lenta y pesada, pero han añadido un montón de diferentes influencias, creando algo completamente único y propio. Desde ritmos progresivos hasta pasajes atmosféricos, desde pianos melancólicos hasta riffs ultra pesados, voces guturales, melodías oníricas, guitarras acústicas, trémolos... Todo está mezclado en una especie de poción que demuestra a los escépticos que el Doom no tiene por qué ser aburrido en absoluto. No es fácil compararlos... a veces me suenan un poco a lo que ANATHEMA hicieron en el ‘Silent Enigma’ aunque MAR DE GRISES son mucho más atmosféricos y sus estructuras son más complejas. Además su sonido es mucho más ‘doomero’, con algunos ritmos realmente pesados, lentos y melancólicos, a veces más cercanos al material Ultra-Doom que al Doom Metal tradicional. Pero no os preocupéis si no os gusta la lentitud de este tipo de bandas, MDG son tan variados que te aseguro que nunca te aburres. ¡De hecho es que querrás escucharte el disco una y otra vez! ¡Y ni siquiera te darás cuenta de que los temas duran ocho o incluso doce minutos! Sin ninguna duda, estoy seguro de que este disco será una de las ediciones más interesantes de este año.

Met The Tatterdemalion Express presenteert de in 2001 opgerichte Chileense band Mar de Grises eindelijk hun eerste wapenfeit. Direct met het eerste nummer harkt de melodieuze doommetal door je emoties heen, waarbij de stem van zanger Marcelo Rodríguez een belangrijke rol speelt. De voor doommetal karakteristieke trage gitaar-riffs zijn uiteraard vollop aanwezig en slepen je mee in sombere stemming.

Dit album bevat vrij diverse nummers, van de bombastische opening met El Otro tot de uitgebreidere nummers als To see Saturn fall, die lekker lang duren en werkelijk geen moment saai zijn vanwege de afwisseling met een beetje progressief aandoende snellere metal. Ook het up-tempo Recklessness komt goed sfeervol over om daarna direct afgewisseld te worden door een klassiek stuk met de naam Self portrait no1.

Al met al is The Tatterdemalion Express een zeer prettige plaat, niet bijzonder deprimerend, maar wel een mooi en meeslepend traject waar je heerlijk in op kunt gaan.
