”MdG at Doom Shall Rise Festival”

”…Nun war es soweit. Der persönliche Headliner des Rezensenten. Vom anderen Ende der Welt nach Europa gekommen um hier ein paar Gigs zu zocken. In der Tat konnten die sympathischen Chilenen selbst es am wenigsten fassen, und waren dementsprechend in euner nahezu übersprudelnden Spiellaune. Und die latenten Befürchtungen meinerseits, dass das Material nicht wirklich wiedergegeben werden kann, wurden schon bei den ersten Tönen zerstört. Die Atmosphärischen, mal harten, mal ruhigen Sounds des Fünfers kamen auch live so intensiv und unglaublich wie auf Platte rüber. Neben der Herkunftsexotik waren MAR DE GRISES aber auch reinstilistisch eher „anders“. Die geniale Mischung aus Funeral Doom und progressiven, atmosphärischen und Akustischen Momenten zog dann aber auch den Großteil der Chapel in seinen Bann. Das Keyboard von Fronter und Sänger Marcelo stand dabei in der ungewöhnlichen mittigen Position direkt vorne an der Bühne. Und was der Mann aus seinen Stimmbändern rausholt ist eh beeindruckend. Mal flüsternd, mal schreiend, mal grunzend. Da war alles dabei was ein Mensch kann. In ihrer Musik aufgegangen sind sowieso alle Bandmitglieder, doch besonders Marcelo starb während der einzelnen Songs mehrere male an seinen Keys, und brach bei „El Otro“ einmal wirklich in Tränen aus. Unglaublicher Auftritt einer unglaublichen Band…”
” …Die wirklichen „Überraschungen“ am DSR III waren wohl neben MAR DE GRISES die deutschen GORILLA MONSOON. Doch im Endeffekt waren alle Bands stark, und vor allem bewiesen alle ein Eintreten für die gemeinsame Sache. Wie schon erwähnt ist die Atmosphäre des DSR Festival wohl einzigartig, und so freut man sich schon wieder auf die nächste Auflage, die einmal mehr in der Chapel stattfinden wird. Jochen, Frank und Roman werden mit Sicherheit wieder für ein Hammerfest sorgen.” (bd)

Was dann kam, war das absolute Kontrastprogramm und sicher nichts für engstirnige Anhänger des True Doom. Mit ihrem avantgardistischen Death-Doom, gespickt mit genrefremden Einflüssen aller Art, insbesondere aus dem Dark Metal, legten die Chilenen die künstlerische Messlatte verdammt hoch. Die zumeist überlangen, komplex arrangierten Kompositionen, in denen die von Frontmann Marcelo Rodriguez gespielten Keyboards eine tragende Rolle einnahmen, forderten den Zuhörern in der Chapel einiges ab. Verstehen konnte man das, was da zelebriert wurde, bei erstmaligem Genuss eigentlich nicht - dazu sind gewaltige Klangkulissen, wie sie etwa in "El otro" auf den Hörer einwirken, einfach zu umwerfend, zu intensiv. Für viele war gerade dies aber sicherlich ein Grund, sich anschließend das Album zu kaufen. Genießen und staunen konnte man aber auch, wenn man mit der Musik von MAR DE GRISES vorher nicht vertraut war. Beeindruckend, wie die Band zwischen verschiedenen Stimmungen wechselte und welche Dynamik ihre Kompositionen boten. So wurde man als Hörer erst minutenlang eingelullt durch atmosphärische, verträumte Klänge, nur um dann durch disharmonische Metalgitarren und wuchtige Drums wieder herausgerissen zu werden. Auch Marcelo verstand es perfekt, zwischen klarem Gesang, Sprechgesang und schwarzmetallischem Gekreische zu wechseln. Eine beeindruckende Show, die einmal mehr deutlich machte, dass die Death-Doom-Szene weitaus mehr zu bieten hat als nur Abziehbilder von MY DYING BRIDE. (doomster)

Mar de Grises were the most exotic band on the bill since they’re from Chile, South America. Besides that they musically were exotic as well because these guys play some proper doom/ death. You might think Beyond Belief is doom/ death as well but Mar de Grises are more in the direction of My Dying Bride-like doom/death but with a definite twist of their own. With keyboardist/ vocalist on the centre of the stage it seemed a bit strange but the performance was overwhelming. Great songs and a great performance made this one of the highlights on the second day. I’m glad I witnessed this band on their European trek because bands like this you won’t see too often I think. Die auf den Posten des Co-Headliner gesetzten Chilenen hatte kaum jemand auf der Rechnung, ist ihr Firebox-Debüt "The Tatterdemalion Express" doch eher noch ein Insider- und Presse-Tipp denn ein heißgeliebtes Fan-Objekt. Allerdings konnten MAR DE GRISES das Publikum mit einer ungeheuer intensiven, monumentalen, finsteren und mächtig kraftvollen Performacne schlichtweg in Trance spielen. Rabenschwarze Funeral Doom- und aggressive Doom Death-Bausteine ergaben im Verbund mit atmosphärischen Zwischenparts und Versatzstücken aus klassischer Musik und Ambient-Sounds ein schwindelerregendes Ganzes, wie es mitreißender kaum sein konnte. Auch der immer wieder bewiesene Mut zur Ruhe, zum leisen Abflauen und tiefem Innehalten brachte eine ungeheure Dynamik in den Set, weswegen die derben Ausbrüche um so niederschmetternder und kathartischer wirkten. Dazu gewannen die Südamerikaner unzählige Punkte mit ihrer energischen Bühnenshow (drei Saitenzupfer, die mächtig Gas gaben und derbe bangten) und den introvertierten, aber ungemein sympathischen Ansagen ihres zugleich auch Keyboard spielenden Frontmannes, der verzweifelt nach Worten suchte, um das unbeschreibliche Gefühl begreiflich zu machen, wie sehr man sich auf diesen Event gefreut habe ("When I was sitting in the plane, knowing I was gonna make it to the fuckin´ Doom Shall Rise....I have no words for that."). Schlicht und einfach ein ergreifend großer Gig!
… Fazit: Das dritte Doom Shall Rise-Festival muss wegen seiner tollen Atmosphäre, der liebevollen und perfekten Organisation sowie der äußerst geschmackvollen Bandauswahl (mit absolut genialen, unglaublich überzeugenden Darbietungen von Isole, Mar De Grises und Mirror Of Deception) schon jetzt zu DEN Konzert-Highlights des Jahres gezählt werden. Alle anwesenden Doom-Jünger aus dem In- und Ausland dürften jedenfalls schon jetzt die Tage bis zur vierten Auflage zählen. Abermals: DOOM HAS RISEN!!! (CL)

”…Mar De Grises on their turn had mainly to cope with the same problems. One of them had to be besides the stage (and they are even with one person more than In Age And Sadness is), that brings that messy-aspect and the problems with lights and sound. But well, again we didn't care, or what? The show was a lot smoother and music-wise better but again the atmosphere was a bit less than the day before in Enschede, and it seemed that the people were a bit shy or just lame because of this. But on the other hand they had a big line of headbanging metal dudes in front of the stage, a thing that is always nice to see (only for the interaction with the bands of course, for the dan-druff flying around your head isn't so romantic, to me…). Though the band was visibly exhausted they threw in what they had and in the end it resulted in a show as intense as it can bed. Singer and keyboard player Marcelo jumped in his apathetic role and singing his lungs out, which is always a very nice thing to see - it seems he writhes with pain and spasmodically coughs out his lyrics, it nearly looks if he's totally insane, but it adds so much to the looks of the band. The songs were again all from the Firebox album "The Tatterdemalion Express", so some songs were again "El Otro", "To See Saturn Fall", "Storm", "Recklessness" and "Be Welcome Oh Hideous Hell". Marcelo told me that he found "El Otro" so nice to play live and that was certainly visible in the bands' presentation. The only difference in set was that in Enschede they played one old song (which I sadly forgot the name of). After this gig the band only had to the Belgian Doom Night with bands such as Thee Plague Of Gentlemen and Officium Triste but if all shows were as good as these two I saw than I think they can look back on a very successful first European tour, up to the next I would say…”

”…I had to think about a guy that came in the pub just before that first funny band would start who asked me 'what doom metal exactly is', for he never heard any of that before. And when I headed to the stage when Mar De Grises just started I saw him headbanging, and nearly falling all the time, so I guess this dude has found his destiny here in Café Rocks. Always a nice thing, though I couldn't keep down a laugh. For me it was the first time I really heard Mar De Grises as well. Pepijn, the bassist and singer of In Age And Sadness, already sent me a song of them to enjoy about a year ago. But enjoying one song is definitely something else than seeing a show. But the little doubt I had about this band was swept away with the very first song. It is obvious that they played from their "The Tatterdemalion Express"-album which was released by one of the leading doom labels today: Firebox/Firedoom Records from Finland. Some of the played songs were "El Otro", "To See Saturn Fall", "Storm", "Recklessness" and "Be Welcome Oh Hideous Hell". But besides good songs the band was driven by the atmosphere they create, different from In Age And Sadness who play with contradictions between heavy and fragile and tempo changes Mar De Grises produces a wall of sound that is definitely an sonic assault on the senses, so to say. It is pretty clear that we're watching a band that is going on routine, on some way or another, they actually just came back from the prestigious doom festival Doom Shall Rise in Germany where they performed in that abandoned chapel - now I saw these shows I wished I was there. Anyway, the band played their music with such a passion that it crawled deep into your conscious and that is possibly the best thing of these Chileans.”
